I have seen a couple of posts talking about a 5-Speed auto as a possiblity for the 2003 SD V10. Does anyone know for sure? I can't find a used CC the way I want it and the users of FTE have educated me (thanks!) that the 2002 has a Dana 60 instead of Dana 50 front axle. I have witnessed a Diesel break it's front end while in the snow with chains pulling a horse trailer (never found out specifically what broke). So... Is it worth waiting for the 2003? The tranny appears to be the only major upgrade, the price will no doubt be higher and its at least 1/2 a year away. If anyone finds a reliable source about 2003SD upgrades, please share.
Don't know how accurate it is since all the economic troubles have hit, but you might read [link:www.bonforums.com/powertrain/trans_new5r110.htm|this].
I talked to my brother today and he works at the transmission plant where the SD automatics are produced. He stated that to the best of his knowledge the 5spd.auto will be phased into production sometime around August.Sounds like a 2003 addition.I don't know if all Super Duty versions will have it available at once or not.
The new 5-speed auto is the replacement of the 4R100. It's called the 5R110W (W is for the wide 1st ratio for towing) They start production behind the diesel in August, then behind the gas after the first of the year. The ratings are 550 lb-ft Gross, 520 lb-ft Net for general applications and up to 600 lb-ft for motorhomes. The misleading factor of these numbers is the fact that they need torque management during the shifts to live through the torque of the engine. So really, they juice the numbers up to compete with the Allison 1000 Series, but can't live in their high torque environment. Basically Ford is inflating the numbers and dumbing down the engine's power. Also, as far as improvements to the 4R100, Ford basically put a fifth range on the back and kept alot of teh internals the same. The shaft diameters and clutch packs are no better than before, thus presenting the same problems with longevity as before. I don't mean to throw a bomb, but as near as I can see, there isn't a Ford auto worth waiting for.
