My 350 superduty dually has a shutter which I believe is coming from the rear. I have had it to the Ford dealer a month ago and he changed the oil in the rearend and it continued to do it. I took it back this a.m. and they told me to "get used to it". Anyone have any help or comments to this problem?
thanks

A shutter?? Like on a house? Just jokin'.
Hey, do this. Give all of us some more details on the noise. Like, at what speed? What does it actually feel like? Does it cause the whole truck to shake? Is just the back shuddering? What have YOU attempted to try and do to remedy this? What year is your truck? Do you think it is tire related? Are there any accompanying sounds that go along with the shudder? Ya know, stuff like that...
So, do that and we'll all get right on it fer ya!!
BTW, Welcome to FTE! Hope my joke didn't offend you. My wife says I gotta dry sense of humor. read enough of my rantings and you'll get used to it.
The "shutter" is in my 2002 F350 2wheel drive 7.3 turbo. It occurs when taking off and turning the wheels. I think always when in a sharp turn. It feels like a mild wheel or rearend "rub"but I liken it to a shutter, because it studders until I straighten it out. Occurs only at slow speeds 1 to 5 MPH. When I first got the truck it didnt do it, then after going on a trip, pulling my 5th wheel it began after I got back. Not during the trip. Took it to Ford dealer and complained and they said they put a different oil in the rearend and that should clear it up. It was good for a few days and then it started again. Now they say get used to it, its what duallys do. Do they?? This is my first dually. I do not feel its tire related because it never done it new. The truck is only 3 months old.

If fresh lube cured the problem for a few days, then the issue is mostly likely in the differential. If the truck has LS and the clutches are not set properly, you can get some binding/shudder. But I thought it only happened when turning- not just going straight.
Anyway, ask the dealer to let you test drive a couple of other duallies that are similarly equipped. If both shudder, then maybe it is "normal". Just be sure to point out that "normal" doesn't mean it's "right".
I have a similar problem in my 2001 truck (see below). It only occurs when taking off and accelerating kinda heavy. If I ease into the fuel I don't notice it. It feels like a mild vibration and only last for a second or so. Never noticed it while turning. That sounds like the limited slip is "engaging" while your turning. I've heard of people adding a special limited slip additive that helps the rear end remain an "open differential" until slip occurs.
Hello! New to the Boards but not Ford trucks!
What "Nomo" said is correct ! There are clutch packs inside the rear diff. and only set up to handle 250ft/lbs of torgue.this is set up by shims behind the clutch packs.there is a test that can be peformed by your dealer with a special tool."or yourself"
being that this is a new truck still under warranty, they should do it.
Knowing that this is a PSD.as we know they produce a lot of torgue at the low end.if you have a Helm manual for your truck it explains what the test procedure does.I don't want to get too long winded on my first post to this the board. Ps one other thing make sure the e-brake is releasing all the way.
Good luck

My dually does it also. It's the limited slip that does it. I especially notice it when turning and backing at the same time. I've decided to live with it because Ford's cure is to add more friction modifier to the rear axle. This will allow the limited slip to slip more and it's already marginal to begin with.

Same problem with my 250. It almost feels like the antilock brakes are kicking in. I have taken it to the dealer 3 times and they say all the f250 do this from time to time. It is nothing to worry about.
They did change diff fluid twice and bleed the brakes but it is still here!
Fortyfords,
welcome to the most addictive site on the web! My wife used to hope and pray that I wouldn't sit around looking at nudie pics on the computer. Now I think she wishes I WOULD! She probably thinks that'd be more normal than spending 4 hours per day looking at a truck site!!! I told her that with a truck, if you take care of her just right, she'll still look the same 20 years down the road! (Man, got in a little trouble for that one!!! Any way, could somebody tell me why Ford would put clutch packs that're only rated for 250lbs/ft of torque in a vehicle with an engine generating twice that much?? Is there something I'm missing here? That just don't make sense!! That was pretty dumb of 'em!!
I just had the same problem with my 2000 F350 Duallie.
It's the juice in the rear-end. Ford knows about it, they call it limited-slip shudder. You need to have a better quality/aftermarket rear end fluid installed with the limited slip additive and that should do the trick.
Hey how come all you guy's got a limited slip?!!!!
My dealer told me the LS wasn't available in a dually!
Not that it would make any difference I bought mine off the lot sight unseen.
