Crate engine
To further our moderator's reply....I just talked to a Ford Truck dealership and inquired more about this. As an example, 1999 Expy engine without labor:
4.6 liter = US$3,600
5.4 liter = US$3,900
warranty is 3 years 36,000 miles. I would have Ford install the engine so that if the engine goes bad they would replace it if still under warranty. Ford says that if you have someone else install the engine and worse case the engine is bad, Ford will replace the engine for free BUT you will have to pay for labor since you had someone else install the engine.
I hope I made sense...too early and need coffee.

to the best of my knowledge Ford does not sell brand new engines on the 4.6 nor the 5.4. At least that's what my friend at the dealership parts tells me. Sorry but I can't help you in your endeavor to try to put a newer engine in an older truck, I'm not that mechanically inclined

you can upgrade ........the easy way would be to buy a wrecked low mile truck , then you would have everything needed to make the conversion , ive seen a 70's ford running a 95 5.0 , the guy who owned it said the most difficult thing about doing the conversion was mounting all the misc. hard ware.he used the eng. trans.and rearend. he paid about $3000 for the totaled 95 w/45,000 miles onit and sold the left overs $1000+. says it runs great, he might be a member here at FTE

I talked to my dealer the other day. For a new 5.4 (not rebuilt) which includes new; exhaust manifolds, crankshaft, camshaft, alternator, oil pump, water pump, pistons, intake manifold, injectors, spark plugs/wires, and everything else. They stressed that nothing is rebuilt, but brand spanking NEW. I was told by an after market dealer that it would be the newer version of the engine with the improved intake. The price was $4076.54 and $1602.00 for installation. This is Canadian dollars !!! I also priced out to get my 97 rebuilt, and all came in at the same price as the new one from ford.
