One final question about wheel hub assembly replacement

Before I completely button up this job, I have one final question for those of you who have done this job before. Looking at this image:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/contents...nt/image05.jpg

It appears to me that the non-metallic thrust washer is hex-shaped. Can someone confirm this for me? When I tore into mine to replace the wheel hub assembly, the thrust washers were NOT configured this way. I suspect someone else worked on this some time before I took ownership and didn't put things back like they were supposed to be. I also suspect that this may be why my bearings failed to begin with. I want to make sure I get it put back together correctly this time.

THANKS in advance! And THANKS jat99 for the image.........

I believe that picture your looking at from the other site is of a older truck.

the newer trucks have a non hex shape thrust washers.you should have 3 washers ,
set up like this
metal/non-metal/metal then the snap-ring to hold the axle shaft.
Unless someone did a upgrade to the truck in the picture.

also this what the 02 model has.

Thanks for the reply, FF!

Here's my deal:

I HAVE a hex-shaped washer, but it wasn't between the two metal washers when I took it all apart. I had NOTHING between my two metal washers. The hex-shaped washer was ON TOP OF the snap ring, between the snap ring and the 4x4 lock mechanism. I don't think this is correct (remember I said I suspected someone else had been in here before me). My instructions tell me that failure to re-install the non-metallic washer between the two metallic washers will cause excessive wear and tear on the bearings. I suspect now that this may be why mine failed. Anyhow, I spoke with a Ford mechanic, and I have the part number for the thrust washer pack ($20+). I just don't want to buy something and then discover I had all the right stuff to start with. I have the hex washer, just want to make sure I put it where it belongs.........

And again....THANKS!!!!

I have manual hubs! CWB ,do you have auto locking?
maybe thats whay its different.

I just looked at some TSB's ,and there have been some upgrades to the vacum actuated hubs.

theres a new washer that is suposed to help with locking and unlocking troubles.

FF, currently the left front rests on a jack stand. I haven't torn into the other side YET. The truck is a dually and that hub extender thingamabob makes it tough just to pop out the 4x4 locking device in order to peek inside. I do plan to take a look at the other side before I complete the re-assembly....as soon as the ice melts off the truck.........

Thanks, man! I'm just glad I have a concrete driveway to lay on. Maybe some day I can advance to an actual cover! - - - ACTUALLY, I did have a chance to put the truck inside, but I tore into it OUTside, and once I had the spindle gutted, I didn't want to put it all back together just to move it. Didn't absolutely HAVE to have the truck to drive, so I had time to wait out Mother Nature. The sun is out now and it looks like I'm gonna be able to finish her up this evening or tomorrow (we unemployed folks have spare time to do all that kinda stuff, ya know). As soon as I get more info about what the right side looks like, I'll post it for everyone.........

Alrighty then....I have now seen the inside of the OTHER front wheel hub on my truck and its the same way as the first one. There is NO non-metallic washer located between the two metal thrust washers, and there IS a hex-shaped, non-metallic washer ON TOP OF the snap ring, between the snap ring and the 4x4 locking device. My service instructions specifically say that having a non-metallic washer positioned correctly is a MUST, but show no detailed picture. Right now, I need to know what the heck to do!

When I pulled the second side 4x4 lock out, this hex-shaped washer I have was stuck to the back of the locking mechanism. I feel like I need a non-metallic washer of some sort between my two metal washers, but I am not sure if this hex washer I do have is the one that is supposed to go there or not. Do I need a different washer between the two metal ones and my current hex-shaped washer put back where it was, or does my hex washer go between my metal washers? ACK!!!!

I could have this baby back together in a few minutes if only I knew which way these parts went back on.........

ANY help will be greatly appreciated!!

I am going to say round/hex/round and be done with it. I have been running oversize tires since I drove out of the dealership(literally) and have not had bearing problems. Now I know that is not saying anything by itself, I could just be lucky, but that is how mine is set up.Also, my hex washer is metal, I checked with a magnet. I seriously can't see how the washer order would affect anything but to me if you have two and one, then my convoluted logic would say to put the one between the two.Seems to me that the greater number of opinions here have it that way.

OK....job's done. I put BOTH of my hex washers in between the metal ones and buttoned it all back up. Inside now just checking on lug nut torque value. The next sound you hear will be that PSD growling to life. I am starting to get excited now! Been a while since my "baby" and me had intimate contact.........
