shake while braking

hello,
i have a 97 f150 offroad 5.4 automatic 4x4, 105,000mile.
while braking when i reach the speed of 45 down to about
40mph i am experiencing a kind of shake in the front end
it does it more on the hills. when i use light braking it is
not as bad. i have checked my rotors with an indicator and
have only a .002 run out .can this be enough to cause it.
i had new tires put on because they were cupping thought
that was problem but it did'nt help. now i'm concerned that
what ever the promblem is it caused my tires to cupp. had
mechanic check ball joints he said they seemed tight.
thanks for any suggestions, ron

I don't think a .002 runout would cause the vibe. A couple of places I would look 1. Shocks 2. Steering linkage 3. Wheel balance. I assume when you checked the rotors, that they weren't scored.

joe,
the rotors were not scored, the pads and rotors were
changed about a year ago, i don't remember whether
i checked the steering linkage but i will look again.
i have been reading about changing shocks, because of
the high mileage, they are the orignals. has anyone ever had this problem and it was fixed with new shocks?
thanks for your replies, ron

I think bad shocks can cause cupping in the tires.

i think i will go ahead and replace the front shocks and
see if it does make any difference and then later replace the rear.
i am thinking of getting a set of bilsteins.

Yup.

1998 F150 4.6 Supercab 4x2

Light braking = brakes were fine
Harder braking = slight shake in the steering wheel, yet no veering left or right, still stayed straight.

Work for me:
1) lower ball joints replaced - no effect
2) new pads and machined rotors - no effect
3) front shocks - no more shaking

Those were my experiences at least :P

To be honest with you, I have no idea. I know they aren't crazy high end though. I like OEM, or as close to that as possible ;P

I figure, you get what you pay for ... and I'm broke right now so I got what I could afford *grin*.

ifishwalleye, I'm not totally sure what could be the cause of the shaking, but I think it would be a good idea to make sure that the left and right brakes in the front are applying the equal amount of pressure as one another. If one isn't as strong as the other, basically one brake in the front is stopping 90% of the truck, which is quite a bit of work for a brake to do, and just this single brake isn't nearly strong enough to do that. Hope you can figure it out and good luck

Wouldn't that cause the brakes to pull left or right depending on the pressure applied?

It would if you let it, but when you are going down a hill keeping the car in a straight line, momentum plays a part in keeping it straight. I may be wrong though. Also, if you get some oil or lube on your brake pads, they will skip around. So check for something that may have leaked on them
