Electronic Overdrive (O.D.) Headache
I have a 1999 Superduty 7.3 TD and can't seem to get the overdrive to work at all. It does not light up on the consol when the button is pressed nor do I FEEL it anymore. I checked the fuses and they are OK. I have no idea what else to check prior to bending over and taking it to the dealer. The truck runs fine and there are no other mechanical problems. You have a short in the wiring at the shifter stalk. We have a 98 at work that has the same problem. The OD control wiring shorts out where it exists the shifter right under the rubber dust boot from flexing a lot and rubbing against the shift mechanism. You can remove the lower and upper steering column covers and see where it comes out of the back of the shifter. The easiest way to fix it is to buy a new shifter from Ford. There is one connector to un-do and one pin that holds the shifter in. The new shifter will come with a replacement roll pin, don't re-use the old one.
