I voted construction because that is what I do and LOVE IT. I am a construction manager for a national builder. BUT got dor what you like to do. People will always need their vehicles repaired and if htis is what you like go with the auto repair.
I think it is important to pick the one you will enjoy the most.Make a choice, then research the job market in your area.get an idea of the wages for an entry level position. If you have more than one interest, major in one ,minor in the other.Just a thought.
Originally posted by 66 Ranger I had to read this thread to see what you were talking about. My suggestion is that you take 'spelling' first. It's important to know the basics.
Think about it this way - you're going to commit a good chunk of time to whatever you choose.
What will make you happy? You're going to have to get up every day and do your job. It won't always be fun - everyone from janitors to brain surgeons have days where they just don't feel like going in - but if you have to be there, then you need to do the right thing.
Additionally, have you researched the job outlook for each of these professions? No sense becoming a welder if there's nowhere to work and nothing to do. Kind of like opening a landscaping business in the middle of manhattan - even if you like it, are you going to be able to live on it?
+ they don't have under water auto mechanics. But if you like water and have mastered welding you could become an underwater welder. Can you say money.
Underwater welders have a short life expectancy. You might make alot of money, but there is a good chance that you will not live to enjoy it very much. I have a few friends that went to a tech school for welding and none of them have found a welding job yet. The demand for welders might be larger in other areas, but around here it is hard to find a good paying job in welding.
I would take auto repair and get ASE certified. Second choice would be auto body. Here is why:
Construction is often seasonal and involves work in all types of weather. It is also dependent on the economy and when the economy is slow the industry drops off.
Labor market information does not show many opportunities for welding nor much opportunity for advancement.
There is a growing demand for machinist and tool makers and this would be a good trade if you are willing to locate in an area where there are a lot of metal manufacturing shops. Automation does effect this occupation as does moving production overseas.
Auto repair and auto body will be in demand regardless of the economy because people need and want transportation all the time and because there will always be accidents. The work is inside and you can work in any geographic location. You do need to keep up with technology hence the need to stay ASE certified. In general auto repair is cleaner and less hazardous than auto body.
I skipped over what everyone else said
It may have been said before... but go with what YOU like
I took Auto Body repair and I HATE it. I like doing it for myself, and for friends and stuff... but I would hate to have to do it everyday for picky people... they want it done "this way" or its not right, even if you can't do it that way.
