Question Do i have all the wires?

I just got an 86 f250 w/ 6.9 and a 4 spd. Before i got it someone had bypassed the starter relay. I had a push button on the column to start it. About 3 weeks ago the push button got stuck on. I toasted my starter. what i need to know is what needs to be hooked up to the starter relay to start the truck? is it just the wire to the starter solenoid or are there other wires that need to be hooked up to make it work like on the gassers? I will be putting a new starter in in about 2 weeks so i am getting the wiring fixed correctly so it doesn't happen again.

You guys rock!!!!

Scott,
First thing there are two starter solenoids on the 86.

One is right behind the passenger side battery and looks just like a gasser solenoid, this is where the wire from the key switch should go to. The battery, alternator, glow plugs and fuse panel are all tied in on the first 3/8 lug battery side.
The small #10 stud on the side goes to the start position on the key switch.
The other 3/8 lug has a 10 guage wire going down to the solenoid on the starter.

The second solenoid has a 3/8 lug for the main battery cable and a smaller screw for the 10 guage wire from the first solenoid. Depending on the starter on your truck you may have another 3/8 lug for the strap or wire going into the starter.

I would recomend the Mitsubishi gear reduction starter over the Delco starter for your truck. They spin the motor much better.

Thanks for the info.
There is a relay on the fender that the Glow plugs go to from there there is a 4 Ga. jumper wire to the Battery side of the starter relay (also on the fender) from there there is a 10 Ga.. wire that goes to the starter solenoid on the starter. The alternator and fuse panel are connected to the battery side of the glow plug relay. There is also a hot wire there that I have no clue where it goes. I originally found it on the starter side of the Starter relay. (The relay was fried) I currently have it hooked to the battery side of the glow plug relay. Will this work without causing problems. or should I move them to the starter relay? and should there be a fuse link in the starter solenoid wire?

Thanks again

Scott

I have a book that shows battery + to glow plug relay + to starter solenoid + with no fuseable link. Where the fuse panel feed, alternator output and the ignition feed hook up to that wire should make no difference either starter solenoid or glow plug relay. I am going to take a stroll up to my truck in a minute or two.
