48f1

Just purchased a 48 F1 with 302 V8 and C4 automatic. Truck is solid but needs repainted and rewired. The truck has been converted to 12 V but i want to use the original gages. Can i convert the 6V gages to 12V? Also can the heater be wired to 12V wthout burning up motor?
This is my first resto project so i will need help.

You need a voltage drop regulator for the gauges. They were used in Ford vehicles thru the 70's. Mount it on the power wire between the circuit breaker and the first gauge.

You also need a larger regulator for the 6 volt heater - you will burn it up on 12V. I got my volt drop from Hotrod and Custom Supply, FL but you could likely pick one up at your local parts house.

I am from East Palestine just south of youngstown. I just purchased this truck and am very excited for spring so i can get it on the road. This truck won't be a trailer queen. its going to driven everyday and if i need to haul something i will. No point in having one and just letting it sit.

my truck

That sounds like my truck except I'm running the old floorshift 3spd behind my 302. I'm going to replace the motor in my heater "an ancient universal" with a new motor. I have heard s-10 ect. heater motors may work. I'm going to pull the motor and take it too the parts store to find a close match.

How is the old three speed working out now that it's hooked up to the 302? Who makes a transmission adapter for this?

302 bellhousing

Its not really an adapter. Its a cast alluminum bellhousing. When I had it out, swapping the wore out 79 302 for a newly overhauled 68, I did not notice any brand name. It seems that I remember seeing this same type of bellhousing in a street rodding magazine. Offenhauser may have made it. It adapts smallbock fords to round bolt pattern flathead transmissions from the 30s to early 50s F-1s. The 3 speed does very well considering it really needs a rebuild. It has wore out at least one flathead and is on it's second 302. It shifts well and other than being a little clinky and clanky it does fine. New bearings should take care of that. Honestly I was going to just run that old 54 year old transmission temporary and replace it but after driving with it for the past 2 years I really enjoy it and think it is more than adaquate behind that 302 even though it is 54 years old. The past month I've had to drive my 50 back and forth to work about 25 miles one way and I have had no problems.

i originally wanted a flathead 3 speed but the truck i bought was to nice to pass up. I may someday want to replace the 302 with a flathead. nothing sounds better than a flathead with dual exhaust and glass packs.

can't wait for spring.
