I have a 1985 Bronco II manual 4 speed w/ overdrive, 4x4. I just bought it and too it out for a spin. It made a wierd clunk vibrating noise and crapped out. The engine runs fine, like a champ, but in 2 wheel drive it doesn't move, in 4x4 only the back tires move and the thing runs great. What happened to it and how to I go about fixing this. It looks like the drive shaft is spinning, but nothing happens. Can anyone help?
Are you sure its only the back tires moving in 4wd? My husband thinks maybe your transfer case is shot, and if its a chain drive transfer case, they're supposedly weak. I wish you luck
Yeah, sounds like the 2-case but wierd that it won't move in 2 wheel. My T-Case on my full size bronco broke the chain once but all I did was lose power to the front, I still had 2WD... and it would gear down in 4Low, just wouldn't put power to the front.
I'm not visualizing the situation. Could you describe it again? For example,
It looks like the drive shaft is spinning, but nothing happens.
Which driveshaft is spinning without sending power to the wheels? If it's the rear driveshaft spinning but no power is getting to the rear wheels, I'd suspect a busted differential or axleshaft. If the front driveshaft is spinning (in 4wd) but no power is getting to the front wheels, again a busted differential, axleshaft, or hub.
I agree with mrshorty, I need a better visual. Walk us through which shafts are spinning in what positions. And what exactly were you doing when the notorious "clunk" occured?
