Most 390 blocks won't safely bore the required .080 over to get the 428 bore of 4.13".

Now, you can still use a 428 Crank to build a 410+ motor, depending on your over bore needed to clean up. Ford actually made an FE410 for a while. You can probably get 410 pistons in .030 over off the shelf somewhere. I'm not sure if you have to change to the 428 rods??? Somebody will clear that up for us.

There are also aftermarket Cranks to get even longer strokes. But these generally require new rods and pistons. But, it's easy to get a 430 CI 390 block motor.

Check out the search feature, and use several different wordings to search this forum. You will find lots of information.

i believe ratsmoker stated a while back you can use the stock 390 rods with a 428 crank and 410 pistons. im sure he will be by here to correct me if im wrong.

The 390 and 428 used the same length rods and often the same casting. There were some hi-po 428 rods that were stronger.

My suggestion would be to build a bored 410 and forget the 428 bore. Negligable gain (my opinion). If you really want a 428 find a 428 block. That would give you a more stable platform for modification, such as CJ heads.

A 390 bored .030 over with 410 internals = 416.28
A 390 bored .060 over with 410 internals = 422.42
A 428 standard (or 390 block .080 over) = 426.54

It comes down to whether or not you are willing to risk a 390 block for the extra 4.12 cubic inches.

Not only were the rods the same in the 390 and 410, but in some cases the pistons are listed as the same number. I believe the way this works is the low compression truck piston makes a higher compression 410. Your parts store will have the info.
