I have to throw this out for people with Rangers. I own a 98 Ranger w/ the off road package. To make a long, expensive story short, the rims that came with this package are 16". However the spare is a 15" rim!?!?! This really pissed me off when I brought it to Ford's attention (worthless national 800#) because they said this was "normal" and for temporary use only. What? Different sized tires in four wheel drive? Or just two wheel drive if you have the spare on the back.
Of course this is a Ford exclusive and a rim cost me $230 in 1999. The other option was $350. And of course the full size tire does'nt really fit in that wheel well under the bed......
I called many dealers that were not even aware of this untill they went out and cheched under the trucks. Then they would get back on the phone with me and say, "Gee that's funny". Very funny. Masterfull thinking.
Its a VERY legit concerning. Someone is giving you the run around. Put different size tires on an axle will ruin the differential gears quickly, in a matter of a mile or so. Don't let naysayers tell you you're complaining about nothing. You spend $20K+ on a truck, you ought to get a usuable spare.
what if he puts that spare on his fornt axle , drives 50 miles and ruins the front differential. would that be worth complaining about? it has happened, and will again. i would rather have NO spare than to have one that will tear up my truck, especially if you didnt know it would tear it up being the wrong size.ever replaced the front diff? not cheap.

I've got a '95 ASTRO van with the "DONUT". Mains are 215/75-R-15. The Donut is a 16" (something like 175/45R-16@65psi).
HOWEVER!!!!! The overall size of the tire (height) is less than 1/2" different than the main. Which is about what you get with most cars that have full sized spares (at least all the older ones that I've seen....bald or damned near).
The "DONUT is designed to get you (relatively slow....that's why there is a SPEED AND MILEAGE LIMIT engraved in the tire) to the nearest station to repair the main tire.
About the only ones that actually use the tire are the ones that aren't afraid of getting a bit of grime under their nails. When was the last time you saw ANYONE with a Lexus, BMW, BUICK, or any other fair to middlin priced car getting tire changed on the side of the road by the owner.
Most people now adays would rather pay the $50 to have changed by some wingnut in a wrecker.
NO THANKS.....I'll pocket the $50 and spend it on something useful.......LIKE A FULL SIZE SPARE AND MORE BEER!!!!
