Hope someone can help. A friend just bought a 1995 Aerostar and it makes a rather loud humming noise under the van. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the van, but the noise does raise concerns. It is always there, ranging from low at idle and increasing with acceleration.

Thanks,

Transmission? Rear end? fan belt? Does it make the same noise in neutral?
Same in Neutral. Sounds more like something related to engine/exhaust. I thought maybe catalytic converter or something like that. Again, its only conerning because it is loud and the vibration in the van is always there.
Take it to a muffler shop and have them raise the van up. Then you can listen to determine where the noise comes from. They usually won't charge anything. But even if they do, it's minimal.
It not uncommon for the heat shields on the exhaust system to become slightly loose on their mountings and cause a buzzing or rattling sound. Often, the shields pick up small stones or other road debris and this vibrates around causing similar noises.
I got a good listen to the noise last night and have some more information. It seems that the sound comes from underneath the vehicle, perhaps near or from the gas tank. The noise is constant in it's volume and pitch. I was wrong yesterday when I said it increases with accelleration. Leads me to think perhaps it is the fuel pump.
It is pretty loud so my question is, if it is the fuel pump, does that mean it is going bad and should be replaced?
If the sound is a constant high pitched hum, it is the fuel pump - a common noise on these vans. Even new pumps make that noise so no, the presence of noise is not indicative of impending failure.
I had the same problem on my old 89 Aerostar. When I got to about 3/8 of a tank of gas it would start making noise. I only had the van a year and it did it the whole time I had it. Never failed........
replace fuel pump because it has a short, this guy wasnt so lucky, ended up drivin 200 miles at 15mlph, it finally quit in the driveway. if you plan on keepin the pump dont travel too far, unless you own a new pair of sneekers.
my 91 had a realy faint, high pitched EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE sound from the rear, while idleing, reving, anything, never changed, so faint I couldnt hear it from inside. never did find out what that was. It was once suggested that it may be a vacuum line. had tha van for 2.5 years, nothing in the rear ever failed, so I dunno!
