Fill it just until it reachs the cross hatched area.Take it for a drive,then check it again.A 1/2 quart will raise the level on the stick about a 1/2" or in the cross hatch area to almost full. This would be a good time to add a drain plug to the pan too. When re-installing the converter plug, just tighten it good and dont worry about using sealer or thread lock on it. Just dont strip it. BTW, I went back with AAMCO synthetic blend MerconV fluid. It costs $2.99 a quart at Autozone.
Got the bolt off last night with the impact socket.
Installed new, bigger Duralast 130 amp alternator.
Everything works alot better. Transmission isn't
shuddering near as much or bad, brakes working good,
lights bright, running better, ujoint noise gone.
The brushes were worn pretty good.
Still have a check engine light, will check code tonight.

Guys there is absolutely no question what oil you should be using in a 4r70w.
The answer is Mercon V and nothing else.
This applies to ANY 4r70w transmission.
Here is the recipe to make a 4r70w last the life of your truck.
Install an auxilary transmission cooler, and install a inline magnefine transmission oil filter.
Change the oil every 15k using the procedure on tccoa.com. Change the pan filter and clean the pan every 15k.
If you want a firmer shift, with less wear on the transmission, then check out Jerry's Mod. This can be found in the transmission technical articles on www.tccoa.com.
A little background on the author of this "mod", he is a Ford engineer, who was on the team that designed the 4r70w transmission.
