TRANSMISSION FRONT-END SHUDDER

MY '97 F150 4X4 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION W/ OVERDRIVE HAS A FRONT-END SHUDDER IN GEARS 2 AND 3. IT FEELS LIKE YOUR RIDING OVER A WASHBOARD. IT DOES IT IN 2 WHEEL AND 4 WHEEL DRIVE ALL THE TIME HOT OR COLD AND NOT AS BAD WITH OVERDRIVE TURNED OFF. ANYONE WITH A SUGGESTION....CHANGING THE FLUID AND FILTER DOES NOT SEEM TO BE THE ANSWER FROM OTHERS THAT HAVE HAD THE PROBLEM????

Did you ever find out the problem? My 97 F150 does similar. Please let me know if you find what causes it. eparra@cajunnet.com

My '97 has the same problem, around 3 and 4.
Also shifts into reverse and drive hard, shifts
hard sometimes while driving. Going to replace
the fluid this weekend. I was a little confused
by the tech article. See below:

4. Disconnect the transmission-fluid return line at the transmission - from where the ATF returns to the transmission from the cooler. This is the line towards the rear of the transmission. Clamp the clear tubing over the line that you removed from the transmission. This is where the fluid comes out.

5. This is where the second person comes in handy. One person starts the engine, while the other holds the line over the drain bucket. A clothes pin can replace the person holding the line in the bucket.
1. Run the engine until you see some air in the clear tubing. As soon as you see air shut off the engine. Refill through the dipstick tube with the same amount as you just pumped out.

NOTE: If you drained the pan and the torque converter, fluid will not run out until you fill the pan a second time. Run the engine for 30 seconds, then stop and add six more quarts.

6. Repeat step 5 until you have added 19 quarts with of new ATF to the system with an E4OD or 4R100. Repeat until you have added 13 quarts with the 4R70W.
1. At least one time while the engine is running move the shifter through each position from P to 1, pausing about 5 seconds at each position. This will change some fluid that would otherwise be trapped in the valve body, accumulators, and clutches.

7. Remove the clear line and reconnect the cooler line to the transmission.

The way I read it, I'm filling and draining at the same
time. It says to attach the clear tube to the tube you
just took off. I don't know. I'll get a book.

If its the 4R70W transmission,drain the converter,pan,and change the filter.Buy 13 quarts of MerconV fluid and add 6 at first.Start the engine and let it run for 15 seconds. Add 5 more then run the gears from Reverse to Low1,pausing for a few seconds in each gear. Check the fluid and add as needed.

I had the shudder problem and switched to AAMCO synthetic blend MerconV. Its a little better then MerconV but cost more.

I had the same problem. Kinda feels like the ***-end breaking loose and your rear tires spinning (bouncing, vibrating violently). I just had mine rebuilt because of a cheap 'spring' that broke and caused $1700 in damages!

The solution is to flush and fill your transmission with Mercon V fluid.

The brand of Mercon V does not matter, I use havoline because its cheap, 2.75 a quart at Advance auto.

It is a semi synthetic fluid.

Mercon V use is for the 4r70w transmission only.
