What Fits
If you intend to run the filler neck to one side or the other, I HIGHLY recommend a top side filler neck. And obviously, if you're going to weld a metal filler neck onto the gas tank, don't put any gas in the tank until after the welding.
As far as what will fit? Measure the space available to see what size tank will fit where you want to place it. Pay attention to the height of the tank, as this will determine how far down it hangs. You don't want it hanging down too far 'cuz it looks bad and you can also scrape it easier.
Check out www.gastanks.com or even places like Summit and Jeg's have gas tanks and usually post the dimensions of the tank and the location of the filler neck along with the size of the fittings.
Also, if you're looking to get a fuel door, I would avoid the Hagan brand. They look cool and have a neat touch-latch feature, but they are very narrow, and here in CA the gas pump nozzles have a heavy, thick accordion-like rubber sleeving (for environmental and safety precautions) that tends to either: (1) not fit into the Hagan fuel door opening, or (2) if you are able to finess the sleeving/fuel nozzle into the Hagan fuel door, you likely either have broken the touch-latch magnet or pushed the fuel door itself out of alignment. So, if you go with a quarter panel fuel door (vs. the bed floor opening), I HIGHLY suggest you get a fuel door from a late model junker or a new one from a stealership that fits all the gas pump nozzles out there in gas stationland! Just a head's up.....
