Question What Fits

What fuel tanks will fit in the frame behind the axle on the 57-60 F-100's. I would like for it to be a center rear fill. So far the only thing I have found is a Maverick tank. I have not figured out how to attach a fill tube to this tank and it looks like the vent tube is inside the fill tube. Does any one know anything about these tanks or is there something better I could use?

I have an Art Morrison 20-gallon foam-filled aluminum tank between the frame rails behind my rear end melon. It is a top center fill. That top center fill actually caused me considerable headaches since I did not just run the filler neck straight up and come throught the bed floor. If you intend to go straight up and put your filler door/cap in the center rear of the truck bed, you'd be fine with the center top fill gas tank.

If you intend to run the filler neck to one side or the other, I HIGHLY recommend a top side filler neck. And obviously, if you're going to weld a metal filler neck onto the gas tank, don't put any gas in the tank until after the welding.

As far as what will fit? Measure the space available to see what size tank will fit where you want to place it. Pay attention to the height of the tank, as this will determine how far down it hangs. You don't want it hanging down too far 'cuz it looks bad and you can also scrape it easier.

Check out www.gastanks.com or even places like Summit and Jeg's have gas tanks and usually post the dimensions of the tank and the location of the filler neck along with the size of the fittings.

Also, if you're looking to get a fuel door, I would avoid the Hagan brand. They look cool and have a neat touch-latch feature, but they are very narrow, and here in CA the gas pump nozzles have a heavy, thick accordion-like rubber sleeving (for environmental and safety precautions) that tends to either: (1) not fit into the Hagan fuel door opening, or (2) if you are able to finess the sleeving/fuel nozzle into the Hagan fuel door, you likely either have broken the touch-latch magnet or pushed the fuel door itself out of alignment. So, if you go with a quarter panel fuel door (vs. the bed floor opening), I HIGHLY suggest you get a fuel door from a late model junker or a new one from a stealership that fits all the gas pump nozzles out there in gas stationland! Just a head's up.....
