I got mine at Advance Auto parts. Had them on the shelf, cheaper than any price I found online. Call around, then surf around, see what the best deal is in your area.
BIG RED BRONCO did you try forward to engage the hubs?my 87 has the bad design hubs so thats another story.my 96 has auto hubs they will lock right away in forward when put in 4 wheel drive.it is in the design to unlock in reverse,if it is in 4 w the hubs stay locked in reverse until the shifter is in 2w.the axel movement locks the hub in drive.on a ch**y that i own i have M M autozone lifetime garuntee had to tell manager that a couple diff times, for replacement.but i also plow snow with this truck, heavy abuse.

If you read my original post again, you will discover that the truck could not roll, move, reposition, relocate, or otherwise depart from being a very large lawn ornament. Once I got an assist from a friend and was able to move the truck forward the hubs locked up fine.
The point was that if the truck cannot move, the hubs will not engage. Checked this out to verify what I read two years ago. 4WD tech at local Ford dealer confirmed what I beleived to be true. If the truck cannot move, the auto hubs will not lock. Does not take much, but the wheels must roll forward (apparently just a couple of revolutions will do) at the same time the front driveshafts are turning in order to lock the auto hubs.
Warn premium manual hubs mean that my front hubs lock when I want them to, and unlock when I want them to. I will never go back to auto hubs.
the front wheels do NOT have to turn to lock the auto hubs. if you press the button or pull the lever and the front drive shaft spins,in either direction the hubs will lock. again as long as the front drive shaft turns.the hubs will unlock as lon as the front drive shaft stops turning and the vehichle backs about ten feet.
if you could spin the rear wheels the hubs should have locked because this would have made the front drive shaft spin as long as you were in 4x4.
OK Bojo, as I said earlier, I am not a 4WD Guru. I know what I experienced and I know what my Ford Motor Company Shop Manual says. I will call the ASE Certified Ford 4WD specialist at the local Ford dealer (old guy, 20 years experience) and tell him he is wrong and you are right.
hey big red im sot saying anyone is wrong but i just never have experienced the hubs working the way you describe.not trying to make any enemies,
i do agree with you. manuals are either in or out and if it was not for that my autos work well i too would have manuels.
i have a brand new set in my garage that i got from advance auto they had them in stck and they were 69.99 so i bought them just in case.
Just before last winter, I had my auto hubs rebuilt and working good. And then a month later, some scumbag stole a hub, in my driveway at night. Replacement hub looks a little different, 3 screws vs 5.
