I got a 2001 F-250 with the 5.4. Highway driving with lots of WOT and/or towing will cuase the motor will go thru a qt in about 500-600 miles. Every now and then it will smoke on start up (of course, not if i leave it at the dealer). The Dealer has put dye in the oil -- no leaks. They are now talking about opening up the motor (heads). Damm its got 23,000 miles. I am not sure I want to have the motor taken apart, even if it is still under warranty.
I know these motors had a leaking problem. Anybody else have a "burning" problem.
sportscar: It is possiable that the puffing of the engine is due to an overly oil filled engine, my 5.4 expy used to drink a quart of oil every 1k sometimes evey 2k miles the problem was the valvecover breather on the drivers side kept sucking up the oil in to the throttle bodie & out the exhaust & on the passangers side the pcv valve was sticking open & also swallowing oil, the remedy for all of this was to replace the pcv valve with a motorcraft one
& then replaced the factory hose assembly on the drivers side with a valvecover breather & that was the end of the oil loss problem. keep us informed turbo ted
