Anything by Robert Heinlein...specifically, Starship Troopers (the movie has NOTHING to do with the book!), Glory Road, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, A Fall of Moondust (oops, that's Arthur C. Clarke!), Citizen of the Gallery, Have Spacesuit, Will Travel...and a bunch more!
Also, Arthur C. Clarke's The Sentinel, Childhood's End, 2010: Odyssey II...and a whole bunch more!
And the frosting on the proverbial cake: David Weber's Honor Harrington series! Start with On Basilisk Station. Honor is probably one of the best written characters out there!
I grew up in Hardin Montana, right at Custer Battlefield, now known as Little Bighorn Battlefield. My mom still lives there and she met Terry once at the dentist office. Every time I go to visit in the summer I go to the battlefield. I am buying a book of his every time I see one and I look for them at garage sales also. Hopefully I will get all of them .
I first read that book was a 13 & have read it several times since then. No other book has grabbed me from the first page like that one did. I was so interested in it, I could put it down.
I even got my ex-wife to read it. And she hasn't read anything that didn't say TV guide or Soap Opera Digest.
If you want a book that will grab you & pull you in until your finished, this will be the one.
It is a little hard to find anymore, but I think it can be special ordered. They may even have it on half.com or ebay.
I second Cryptinomicon. I'm not a very avid reader, I get bored real easy. So a story has to really catch my attention. When I bought that huge book, i didn't think I was going to read it, but being a computer geek, I had to try. It got to the point that I would get home at 7 am from working a 12 hour shift and couldn't go to sleep until I read some of that book.
Really cool story, and I'm getting ready to read it again!
Black Ice: The Invisible Threat of Cyber-Terrorism The first book to define the clear and present danger posed by a cyber-terrorist attack on the U.S. computer- and network-dependent infrastructure. The pages are packed with interviews from members of terrorist groups, including al-Qaida, as well as key insiders involved in planning and executing the U.S. plan for the defense of cyberspace, including Tom Ridge, James Gilmore, CIA and NSA officials--and even al-Qaeda supporters. Internet security expert Dan Verton investigates how cyber-terrorism could occur, what the global and financial implications are, the impact this is having and will continue to have on privacy and civil liberties, and how to prepare and prevent against cyber-terrorism.

If you want to stick with Sci-fi, I'd recommend The Foundation Trilogy by Asimov and Dune by Herbert would be a good start.
