I went and picked up 500 board feet of red oak today, about 350 miles total. Got 13.3 mpg for the trip. All two lane driving at about 62 mph. Not bad considering the truck weighed 9300 lbs loaded! Anyway, we got 5 miles and the darn slick bedliner allowed all 2300 lbs of lumber to slide out on the ground.
We had it strapped together and it stayed strapped together when it landed. We reloaded the lumber and didn't strap it together the second time and did not have a problem for the rest of the trip.
When 2300 lbs slides out of the bed, the tailgate gets bent into an "L" shape. The cables held, the bumper held, but the tailgate didn't. Anyone replaced a tailgate lately? How much?
I did the same thing with a load of ply wood, OK did not bent the tail gate but put it all on the road
Call your insurance agent and ask them for a listing of used parts, they track it because most require take offs to be used when you can get them so the have sources.
I lost a whole load of pine t&g once off my trailer about 1000 bf.
Going up my steep driveway boy was I pissed, took me an hour to clean it all up...
Sometimes the people who do the boxes on the trucks have bed and gates for sale reas...Look in your area..Dealers can tell you usually...Bummer about your gate...
Just saw a new price of $300

maybe the right thing to do is lash the cargo to the truck..... what if there was a car or worse yet, a biker behind you and you killed or maimed them????
Nafzimo!! If you would check the above link, you will find some very interesting reading about this very subject! There is a guy with the same name as you quoteing "The only person held acountable is the idiot that didnt secure the load". I know from your prevoius post you(and others) do not agree with me, but as home improvement stores grow more popular, incidents like this will become more apparent!
Abendx made a valid point that should be taken seriously, any one of us would feel terrible if our actions, or lack of, inflicted pain on another person. This could happen to anybody, if you are not sure, ask for help!
I'm not picking on you matt, just a subject I think needs to be addressed,
The Supr duty tailgates are available at Wall Mart. Original quality in all of the original colors. Great price, you must remove your self so bring a screwdriver. There is a parking lot sale this weekend!
I guess I will be locking my gate when I go to any stores,,,Damn,,68 351, thanks for opening my eyes to the sale at Walmart,,I guess mr Smith & Wesson, is about ready to come out of retirement !! Better lock them Tailgate's Boys !!

Woa there Lenny! I never said anyone but myself was accountable... and in no way should the guy selling me the lumber be responsible for tying down my load!
As for securing the load to the truck, we stacked the boards in as neatly as possible (all diferent lengths and widths) and tied the bundle together. Then we put straps over the top and down to the bed anchors in the corners. Just wasn't enough.
Oh and the lumber stayed put, I drove out from under it at a stop sign... So for a motorcyclist to be in danger, he would have to be out on a motorcycle in Iowa in January with 3 in snow on the ground and creeping up 1/2 inch from my bumper at a stop sign.

Nafzimo, I dont think responsible is the right word, asking for advice/help maybe! You were fortunate this time,"just wasn't enough"= damage to your truck only. My point is for anybody loading a pickup or trailer to secure the load down, if you are not sure how to do it, dont be afraid to ask for assistance, if the load comes off and does damage, you will be held responsible!!
Have you tried looking on Ebay? I was in the market for a tailgate myself about 6 months ago (FYI: don't forget to latch the tongue down on your trailer boys when loading the ATV's) and they had tons of them.
Speaking of tailgates, how much weight can they handle?? I'm speaking of when you add 2 ramps and load a 800 pound Quad. I've seen a ramp system that uses a fold down support to set the ramps on to spread the weight to all the gate instead of setting the ramp end on the gate. ( http://www.atvracks.com/uniloader.htm )
