Duretec or Vulcan

Is the 3.0L engine in the 2004 Ranger a Duretec or a Vulcan?

Thanks,
Paul

If it doesn't have multiple OHCs with the spark plugs right there in the middle of the cam covers for all to see, it is the vulcan. I don't think they put the Duratec in any trucks. I think it is too wide to fit in a Ranger.

That's right, the Ranger only gets the 3.0L Vulcan.

My father's Escape (not a true truck since it is FWD) has the Duratech 3.0.

It's rated with 200hp!

I'm waiting for Ford to put this 200 hp jewel in the Ranger. I've driven a Sable that had this engine and was really impressed with it. I would expect the same fuel economy with 50 extra horses available.

Ford actually tunes the 3.0L Duratec to the different applications that it's used in ...the one in the Sable you drove probably had a little different power curve than the one that's in the Escape. I think some further tuning would have to occur before the Ranger platform could make full use of its potential.

HP is nice, but torque is probably more important to most Ranger owners.

The 3.0L Duratec and the 3.0L Vulcan are about as similar as Eminem and Perry Como.

The Duratec is DOHC, likes to rev, and has huge cylinder heads to hold those cams. It can make power, but when so tuned doesn't have much low end torque.

The Vulcan was considered a good performer in the mid 80's but technology has passed it by. The basic meghanical design is right out of the 1960s. But -- it is about $1000 cheaper to build than a Duratec, so when you are selling low margin compact pickup trucks.....

I doubt you will see a Duratec in a Ranger from the factory anytime soon.
