Engine light - shop says Gunk???

We have had 4 days of cold -53 with windchill, -40 without. Truck plugged in at work and home.
Ran fine till today after work, engine light came on. I sat for 5 to let it warm and when i tried to drive it, it was like I was stuck in first gear. As it got warmer it ran better.
I phoned the dealership, and the service guy said that they were getting a few in, and had I added conditionere to the fuel.
I asked why? Nobody said squat to me about that.
He says gunk, add conditioner, run 30 minutes and it should be OK. I did, it isn't.

Any better ideas?

Nic

I agree with the tech.

In that cold of weather there is no chance of free-flowing diesel fuel. I would add anti-gel to the max concentration. There is stuff from "Power Service" company called 9-11. It melts the wax and "gunk" in the filters from gelled fuel.

I would pour a bunch of stuff in and hope for the best (will not hurt motor). If you end up with a tow and new filters.... you'll spend a whole lot more than a few bottles of anti-gel.

Good luck.

I agee with Beachbumcook in that there is zero chance of fuel not gelling under those ocnditions. Heck, I'd gel at those conditions

A time honored method for winterizing fuel in sub-zero conditions is to mix one gallon kerosine per 10 gallons diesel fuel but that was for the older diesel's, like tractors. Anyone have any expirience mixing kerosine with diesel in the PSD?

If I remember right, you are not supposed to.

With many different additives available and Ford "approving" the Staydene (spelling)... I would stick with that and NOT use Kerosene.

Good luck,

I am having similar issues right now. I filled up on Friday and the temp was one degree F. I awoke saturday and ventured into town. About five miles from the house the truck shut down, I have put power service (max mix) and a new fuel filter and I am still having issues with it shuting down.

Any suggestions?

How many miles?
Do you park out side?
What is your build date?
Has your truck been "flashed"?
First time in cold weather with truck?

DO NOT use Kerosene.

Poured a container of some crap in the tank and an hour later the engine light went out. Gonna buy Staydene on Monday and use it.

The treatment is cheap, recently I got a bad tank of diesel from the local Kum and Go. Suppositly Winter Blend, only 15 outside, plenty warm. It gelled up. My uncle got there before me, put a full bottle of 911 in the tank, but that did not help any. With a 1 ton hay bale in back, and floored running 2200 RPM, got it to the local parts store, and called Kum and Go, they told me they would pay for parts, plus 100 an hour for whom ever works on it, which was me. Replaced the fuel filter, 911 was in the tank, along with the white bottle of P/S, which prevents gelling. I figured it was still gelled, but i pulled the codes to be sure it was not a fuel pump. The fuel pump is fine, I changed the filter, it was filled with garbage, and only 5K on it. Plus the water in fuel light came on, so i drained the water separater. Still no start. So the local shop was kind enough to unload my hay bale, and push the truck with the fork lift, with the bale on it, into their 70 degree shop. Lowand behold, go their this morning, little rough starting, but it has run fine all day. The 3 dollar P/S bottle is worth putting in the tank, even if it is the winter blend. Even though i sorta came out ahead, would have been easier to spend the 3 dollars. p/s also makes the truck run smoother and start easier.

78Fordman,

You from Iowa???

I grew up in Iowa and went to school at U of I.... we had a Kum & Go (you mentioned it in your post for bad gas).

We went there for beer and renamed it the "Sperm & Split... NOT Kum & Go!!

Just wondering if you did the same??

Take care,
