Hey guys, Still soaking up all the info on the forum great job. I have a couple questions.
1) I ordered the truck I disscussed with you guys a few weeks back and the dealer called and said the build date is feb. 16. My question is, is there any chance of getting an engine with a build date in 03?
2) What is a waste gate, and how does it effect performance?
3) How does removing the muffler effect the computer? I guess what I mean is there any way it could possibly have a negative effect on the computer or turbo?
I'm still new so I appreciate your patience
Thanks
1) Possible but unlikely. Ford (as many other manufactures) works on just in time. They don't have a whole lot of engines laying around. My X was built on the 23rd, the engine on the 20th, and they had to get the engine from Alabama to Kentucky!
2) It allows excess air pressure to escape when your engine doesn't need it. The 6.0 doesn't have one.
Thanks psdwanabe, It's just a lot of money, that would make anyone worry. About the exhaust I thought I read a thread where someone either removed there muffler or changed the stock and the dealer blamed new problems on the exhaust.
Just so you guys know, the truck I ordered is an F250 Lariat CC 4x4 6.0 manual FX4 with all the accessories, can't wait to pick it up dealer says it should be there 10 days after build date. Thanks again
My truck was ordered, 12/18/03. the engine was built 1/15/04 . the dealer said the truck was due to be shipped from the Kentucky plant 1/19/04. the truck arrived 1/29/04. to Western New York area. I was told by a VERY KNOWLEDGEALBE Service Manager, that the typical supply of engines at the plant is around 3 days. I also am VERY Confident that removal of the muffler AND CAT will beneffit performance(somewhat) and EGT's(especially). DEPENDING ON YOUR DEALERS ADDITUDE, this may be a Warrenty Concern. Off the record, some care-some don't.
I was told that 95 part numbers (6.0 PSD) were changed on or around 9/22/03, and that "many" problems have been resolved. It also helps a customer alot to purchase a 6.0 from a dealer with AOLT of diesel experiance, this could result in the difference between a 1-2 day repair and a 2 week repair! This Service Manager has PROVEN Himself to be very knowledgeable, and Honest with My family (I double check my info regularly with other sources) and has yet to misslead us.
MY truck does not have the pilot injection activated and I can testify that it is still SIGNIFICANTLY QUIETER THAT THE 7.3 That was traded in. Stitting in the cab w/ the radio volume quite low, I strain to hear it idle(warm ofcourse)! While this is my first post, i have read and worried from months about this 6.0 Things are looking good so far!
I too am curious about the pilot injection:
I believe my truck/engine were assembled late december (right before FMC's "holiday" shutdown I think) Truck arrived at dealer 18 Jan. I didn't pick it up until the 28th...had 9.2mi on the odo then.
How can you tell if the pilot injection is active or not? Do I care? ( looking for some guidance on this one...)
My truck is quite a bit quieter than my previous'01 7.3...everything seems to be just fine right at the moment @ a measly 360mi on odo...
Looking forward to hearing some more on this one...
I just picked up my 04 4x4 CrewCab 6.0 auto this weekend. Man do I love it. My first non-marine based diesel. Where exactly do I find the build dates from the truck and engine? Mine was shipped from Ford on 12/19/2003. I have a 2004 sticker on the valve cover, but cannot ascertain the exact dates of build.
hey, psdwanabe...
Thanks for the vid-audio clip. it helps. My unit does not have that"oscillating" sound...so I guess my PI is inactive.
Really liking this truck - can anyone tell me if the dealers are still cramming Flashes/updates down our collective throats? Again, I believe my unit is a late dec '03 build. I think I like it just the way it is...
NEW QUESTION: Looking forward to putting extra guages in it for towing. I'm leaning towards both an A-pillar setup (for the "big three" guages: boost, pyro, trans temp), along with an underdash setup (for oil temp, ammeter). Anyone have any recommendations, ideas?
Note, the oscillation in my clip is caused by me pressing and letting off the throttle, but not enough to cause an rpm change, but enough to cause PI to cycle on and off.
I was actually advised by the service dept. manager that removing the muffler is fine as long as you do not remove the cat. Removal of the cat is what terminates the exhaust warranty. Besides, the exhaust warranty is only 36000 miles, so if you want to remove the cat, just wait until 36000 miles.
I may have spoken out too early. On my bike it is a straight muffler, so I was able to just "punch the center out and re-install it. Thus it gave it a bit louder sound and a better flow, and it still looked stock. I don't remember if it is possible with the ford exhaust or not. Which is bad because I was just under the truck yesterday doing an oil change.
