01PSD, I use my truck to haul the wife's horses, notice I said the wife's horse's, around the country. Mine is set up for pulling down the road. Powerstrokes are real grumpy in the winter. Before you do anything, wait till it warms up before dropping the cash. I'd rather spend the money on a good prime rib dinner at the Irma in Cody, WY.
The king of the scan tools would be the Rotunda New Generation Star. That's the one found at your local Ford dealer, but it is prohibitively expensive for the garage mechanic. IMO the next best thing is this

I would take a look at JC Whitney. I bought some gasket material from them a while back and soon I received a catalog. I was just looking in it to see what they had, and they carry a wide selection of diagnostic tools priced pretty inexpensively for us do it your selfers. I noticed they had one that displayed the code and what it meant. I have always thought that JC;s stuff was a little second rate, but if the price is right and you arent using it in a production shop......who cares.
cookie88, thanks for the ford reader lead. that looks like it may be the one for me. do you have one. 79cj, your right i also think jcwitney has tried to improve their product line. tom
