We've had our 02 Ex for a week and have noticed that during unplugged cold starts that there's heavy white smoke until it warms up. Our old 2000 didn't do this. Is this normal? Any solutions?
I don't want to smoke out our neighbors during warm up.
I got the ldm glow plugs and it starts at -10F without being pluged in. lots of white smoke= that is normal= same with standard glow plugs but won't start at -10F if not plug in
The white smoke on cold days is normal until it warms up. Shendoa, if you are using 15w-40 you might try switching to 10w-30 in the winter or a 5w-40 synthetic. Also try recycling your glow plugs 2 or 3 times before trying to start in the cold temps, that will also help.
ok where do i get 10/30 oil rotellat don't make it and i don't want to use amsol for a million dollars a galon= I know about the c but I live in maine and for some reason the only oil i can find is for gas not diesel= so i use rottelaT 15/40 = I change my oil every 4 or 5 thousand miles no matter what i use so no sence in getting amsol. cause i would change that also at 5000 miles. ialso use duralube = addative. I am a engineer and duralube does work I tested it on a lathe. friction pressure test.
I have also been having intermittent cold start problems below about 20 F. The dealer cannot find any problem. Glow plug relay has been replaced about 2 months back and seems to be working.
I have seen instructions on how to check the glow plugs on 94-97 models at the plug without removing the valve covers.
Is it possible to do the same with an '02 without removing the covers. Does anyone have the pinouts or procedures for the newer models. The connectors are different from the 94-97.
I live in Minnesota and Runnings can get you 10w/30 shell rotella oil. They only had the 15w/40 oil but once we asked they ordered the 10w/30 oil and now stock it. Hope this helps for your area.

I don't doubt for a minute that duralube is an excellent friction modifier, but considering the other stresses that your engine oil is subjected to, I have to ask: have you tested duralube in an extremely high psi environment, duplicating the HPOP system?

Try this- turn the key on to activate the glow plugs, and ignore the "Wait to start" light. Don't start the truck for about 30 seconds. Then, once you start the truck, see if there's noticeably less white smoke than before. If so, you might just need to follow that starting regimen to let your glow plugs work longer before firing 'er up. If not, it's possible that you've got a glow plug relay that's not operating properly.
How heavy is the white smoke? Locomotive heavy, or merely embarrassingly heavy?
quadzilla thats how I start my truck and it works real good that way, I dont plug mine in until it gets below zero outside. I think on my truck, there are two relays, glowplug then after that the other one kicks in. not sure what that relay is called. 01psd
quadzilla, I just looked in my book and the other relay is for intake air heater. I can hear both relays go on and off before I start up the truck. 01psd
My 97 f350 did the same thing, would not start under -7 degrees celcius without plugging it in. I had 4 out of 8 glow plugs not working. New plugs relay and all is well. Still smokes a little bit but not like it used to.
I have the same problem with my 97 350. I live in Vegas and it doesn't get that cold but once it is below 40 degrees it starts to give me major smoke and starting problem. If I plug it in I have no problems. Should I have the glow plugs replaced??
Hey Gosman_454, I would have them tested and your relay as well. Then you will know, any ford dealer can do it, alot of guys on this board do it themselves. If you check past threads you will find some good info.
