5.4 puffs blue smoke sometimes
I purchased a 2003 F150 with the 5.4 recently. Sometimes when I first crank it, it will puff blue smoke out the tailpipe for maybe 15 seconds. Seems to run okay, no noise, not using oil. Only does it maybe 1 out of 10 times cranking. Anyone ever seen their do this? What do you think is going on?

I just started having aproblem with my 5.4L 2001 F150 Supercrew blowing out blue smoke at 90,000 miles. It only does it when the engines cold. I've been told that since it only does it when it's cold that it is probably the valve guide seals. I spoke to an individual I ran into who worked at the local Ford plant about this problem. He told me on my 2001 Ford used "O"-ring type valve guide seals, but that they now use what he called "umbrella" type seals and it has solved the problem. Does anyone know if this is true? Can the "O"-ring type be replaced with the new type on my 2001 5.4L?
I typically hadn't check my oil level as I have it changed ~ every 4-6 weeks. I noticed it smoking about 5 weeks after my last oil change, and thought they might have overfilled it. When I checked it was ~3 quarts low (I'm checking the oil level weekly now!).
When I talked to my Ford svc mgr. he said that all engines have what ford considers "normal" oil consumption, and that a quart every 1,000 miles was considered normal (?).
I've also replaced 4 coil packs so far. The 1st at 39,000 miles. All have been on different cylinders, all at my cost. My Ford Svc. Mgr. said there have been no service bulletins or unusual number of incidents with the coil packs. He obivously hasn't searched the net on this problem!
When I had the last coil replaced by a private garage, I asked the mechanic if he had any suggestions how to solve my coil problems - He suggested I trade my F150 in on a Toyota!
Does anyone know if there are aftermarket coilpaks available that don't have the problems associated with the Ford coils?
Thanks!

I had a procedure done on my "00" F-150 4.6L called Castle Ultimate tune-up.
It consists of puting a cleaner into the gas tank, then they hook up an aresol can to the fuel rail. After the truck runs the aresol through, they put the complete top end under a vacume to which ALL the carbon is litarlly sucked OUT of the top end. This also cleans the injectors.
By doing this, it does NOT run the carbon through the catalitic converter and it does a GREAT job of cleaning up the valves, the seats and the pistons.
The cost is about $79.00 .
This doesn't help with the COP problem but it did STOP mine from that blue smoke on start up.
