Have any of you installed one intead of the c4 or c6. Is there much difference in the mount. I read that the Ford 9" rear end from a 57 to a 72 half ton truck will work in all f100's. Is that correct?
I just replaced the FMX in my 56 F100 with a AOD trans, the engine is a 351W and the rear end is a 9 inch out of a 76 F100 (thats what the paper work says that I got with the truck) I thought the 9 inch was installed in p/u's untill 1978 but they seem to think it stopped in 1972 whatever it's almost a bolt in you will have to figure out how you want to mount your shocks no big deal.
You will need the 164 tooth ring gear and starter for the AOD along with AOD yoke (spelling)
I got the trans shift cable from Lokar and had to make a bracket to add an addional return spring. I was lucky and a friend of mine had the correct tool to set the trans pressure (if this isn't correct the trans will burn up in a very short time)
merc you did not need to buy the adapter kit for the aod. I checked my local salvage and they have several 9" rear ends off of trucks and that is good. They also have several AOD trnasmissions. There should be no problem connecting it to a 292 then other then what was mentioned? I will have to shorten the DS and maybe alter the transmission mount? Ed
No I said that my eng is a 351W (it was from a 1971 Mustang) not a Yblock. To install the AOD to a Yblock you will have to add a adapter. I am not sure if it is ready for production yet. I lost the web site that was showing the adapter also thought it was going to be a little pricey
You will need the AOD yoke also and the driveshaft out of the truck or just have a new driveshaft made to match both rearend and trans.
Just for the record I also have the volare frt susp.
I had to move my trans mount rearward a slight amount. Trans mount is a aftermarket piece.
Got you. I am still trying to decide whether to go with a SBF or with the 292. According to all info the SBF is the cheapest route. I just do not want to have to modify the frame too much. I like to keep as much of the original truck as I can. Ed
OK. www.transmissionadapters.com. I was wrong it is for sale $695 but you do get a new starter and a few other things
Also try www.streetrodbuilder.com just for a short article on the install. The full article is in the Jan 04 issue (you know I think I have that)
If you want to read about Yblocks try members.aol.com/yblock/yblock.htm
Then click chat then click Yblock discussion forum2. The AOD discussion is on the 4th page.
If you are going to switch to IFS maybe you would like a newer engine also. In fact you could get the engine and AOD trans out of the same vehicle. You may want to increase your budget and plan on riding the bike a little longer. Whatever way you decide to go it is a blast to drive these trucks.
Yes I wanted to stay Y-block but looking at the cost difference of a motor transmission install it looks like a 302/351 is the way to go and save money. That way I can add HP and then I will just sell my 239/3m to a needy person. Ed
If you are thinking about just modifying the current front susp you can buy a engine mount crossmember from places like Mid Fifty or Carpenter to name only a couple of sources. They are a bolt in and won't modify your frame. You may have to add a new trans crossmember for the late trans. I'm not sure what you will have to do to the production trans crossmember to make the AOD trans clear perhaps nothing.
If you are thinking about retaining the current style frt susp and adding power steering, disk brakes, new springs, perhaps a dropped axle and all of the components needed to rebuild susp that is not a cheap date.
I guess it's whatever makes you happy but I like the Volare frt susp,351W/AOD,9 inch combo.
My 54 Merc car has the stock 256 Yblock. No matter what the purest say parts are not plentiful or cheap for any Yblock.
