Looking for business ideas

I work for a large corporation and my schedule allows for a lot of time off due to a compressed workweek. I work 12 hour shifts with three on four off and then four on three off. In three and a half years I get a two month sabatical leave. I will have my Bachalor's degree in business management by the end of 2005, which my company is paying for. I have a company stock participation plan and a company stock option plan that hopefully will add up to enough to open a business by the time I go on sabbatical. I hope to have a business that I can run on my days off so that I can keep my regular job for the benefits and supplemental income, atleast for a couple of years. I've thought about a self serve carwash or laundramat because of the lack of employees to manage and therefore no workman's comp insurance premiums, which I have heard is outrageous. Does anyone have ideas on business concepts? I would need atleast 20% down in order to get a business loan. I hope to have atleast $25k-$30k in stock by then.

There are a lot of low maintenance options, one of the most profitable being vending machines.

Your local paper should have business oppurtunities listed on sundays.

A rubber route. I'm not kidding. There is lots of money in condom machines. It may mean a lot of time on the road. I know an old man who supported a whole family with a W Texas rubber route. Paid for a brand new van with quarters. I would have loved to seen that. Of course, you never know who your gonna meet in the men's room. Every buisiness has its downside, I guess. GL

How about opening up a consulting firm? That's what I would like to do. People would come to you for advice on whatever you consult on.

I knew a guy who was a "productivity consultant". Business owners would bring him in to their shop, give the guy a tour, and a couple days later they'd get some valuable advice on how to be a more productive business. A lot of it is common sense, sure, but people actually pay money for someone else to confirm their gut feeling.

I'm glad I posted this question, because it gets me thinking about avenues that hadn't occured to me before. Keep the suggestions coming. I appreciate it.

I've been self-employed for 20 years. Avoid a buisness that only you can do with a market imposed limit on the rate. There are only so many hours in a day and billing by the hour means a limit to max income. (For most normal occupations, I am exclude doctors and lawyers who are compensted by the hour out of proprortion.) I think you know what I mean. I just sold mine and am looking where to next put my energy. Buy low and sell high sounds good to me. I am still trying to fiqure out what to buy low though. GL

Look into home alarm systems. It is something you can do without a lot of capital.

TommyLee- why dont you and Pamela just keep making "home videos" theres big money in that industry.
wait... this is Tommy Lee from Motley Crue's rock band right?

i like what BigRigFixer said. consulting. where i use to work they paid $30,000 to have someone "consult" but the problem was they didnt know their **** from a hole in the ground. all they would have to do was ask us. the employees who dealt with the companies flaws everyday.

i would like to start a consignment center. find a nice lot or two near a busy highway, put a fence around it, people drop off their stuff and say "sell it for me" and i say " ill take 10 percent after that sells" easy.

Funny you mention carwash-

I've been wanting for years to build one near my house cause the closest is about 10 miles away and there are many 1000's that would use it around here.

It's a no brainer in this case- hope I get around to it first.

I could tell you but I'd have to kill you first

Hopefully, I will get around to building it in the next year or two.

My info is always non specific enough to enable me to say what I want to without repercussions...

Was fully a joke anyway, not the types of property I like to own. But I do have some experience building carwashes, so if it's in this area and ya need a thinktank member, don't hesitate to ask. I'm telling you right now,,,, a carwash is NOT inexpensive to erect. But,,, once it's up, in the right location could pay for itself within one year.

Thanks for the offer of advice, I'll probably take you up on it if everything works out.

I'm dead serious about doing it- got the cow pasture in mind where it should be placed thats right across from the only gas station for 10 miles.

With all the salt on the roads around here, everybody tends to wash at least once a week this time of year.

I'm just hoping the guy that owns the gas station doesn't try it before me- think he's already maxed out his property though.
