railroad winch?

I might be buying a warn industrial winch off of a BNSF rail truck. Problem is, I don't know anything about the industrial winches. I rememeber the guy saying it was a 20K warn, but that's all he knew. Anyone know what drive style these things are? electric, pto, or hydraulic? If they're electric what voltage do they run at? I've been looking around for info and haven't been finding much, so i figured i'd ask here.

You will probably loose some lift with coil springs and a 150 pound winch plus what ever the mount weighs. But if it will move a train . . .

my guess is it is hydraulic or pto, i have a pto 20,000 and i love it and yes it will move a train, i got mine for $100 and the pto unit and shaft was another $400, it took some work figuring out how to mount it but i did it without to much trouble

I'm going to get a personal look at this winch in about a week, that'll let me figure everything out. I saw a picture of it and it looks like it's about 10-12" in diameter and about 18-20" wide. If you look at the front of one of those rail service trucks that can drive on the street or follow the rail, it's that style. All i know is that it looks frickin heavy. I've watched one pull a stalled locomotive, so i figure it can pull my truck. Only issue is I did some more looking and found out most of those trucks run 24 volts I guess i'll just learn in a week or so. . .

I have seen several go "OffRoad" before and it wasn't pretty!

Plus, if one stalls, I don't want to push it.

Just think with a ****** block, 40,000 pounds.
