Totaled my 84 F150 after rebuilding the 300, new clutch, carb, and a few other items. Good thing is that the drive line was not damaged. Finally found a good body to put my 84 300 & 4 speed stick in. It is a 1990 F150 with 300 EFI and 5 speed stick. Which would be the best route to take on the change out? Leave my engine carbed since it has a new one, or convert to EFI which means I have to swap the head of the EFI engine onto my 300.
I am leaning toward the carb. Is there a bear waiting in the bushes if I do?
A friend told me all I have to do is either change the fuel pumps, or put an aftermarket low pressure fuel regulator in the place of the EFI regulator and I'm DONE. True or False
I have the head, distributor and all the piece part for the EFI but the head will have to be reworked which will be about $200.
Also, should I stay with leave the 5 speed in the 1990 or swap out my 300 and 4 speed as a unit? 1990 drive train has 220,000+ miles, my 84 has about 140,000.
I'd stick with the injection. Carbs can be a real pain in the a$$. Also the gearing on the 90, might be better suited for the 5 speed. Always nice to have a Fuel economy gear like 5th gear. I'm guessing that changing all those parts will totally screw up your computer system. I wouldn't want to get into the costs of diagnosing some of those problems
Would you know it the splines on the input of the 5 speed and 4 speed are the same? I had just put a new clutch in my 84 so I am hoping they are the same so I don't have to change the clutch plate out again. Also, if I go with the EFI, can I leave the manual fuel pump installed and disconnect the fuel lines? Or will that hose something up?
i'd go with the EFI setup since ya got everything in front of ya to do it with. as for the tranny i'd swap your 4spd in with it. the mazda 5spd is a POS. you could leave your pump in place, but you can buy a cover up plate for it for little of nothing or build ya own.
If your a guy who does a lot of work yourself I'd stick w/ the carb. or if you are familiar with FI then use it, but that carb is a POS, I know from experience and headaches, I too already have a rebuilt after going through 3 carb kits. If you do stay with the carb. he is right about the fuel pumps, also take the split manifolds off the newer 300 and stick them on the older one, most people say they are just about as good as headers I guess. Txquadhunter24 is right, I don't know if your gonna use this truck to hard, but a mazda has no place in a ford in my book, those mazda's are junk.
Great advice. I think I will have the FI head reworked and change the 84 to FI. I was talking with a friend at work that told me the same thing about the 5 speeds. I did not know they were made by Mazda. Thanks all for the help.
