A.O.D. conversion

I am currently on the planning stages of a total rebuild of my 78 ford. I have a a.o.d. tranny from a 85 mercury. I know the tranny won't bolt up, but does anyone make adapters to fit this tranny to a '78 300 six? And if I can get it to bolt up how about the other connections? (T.V. cable and such?) I like the 300 six, but I really want 4 gears. I have the 5.0 from the same car as the tranny and if I can't get the transmission to bolt up to the 6 I will probably go ahead and install the 5.0.

Can anyone give me any suggestions?

I thought the 300 and the 302 used the same bellhousing???
As far as I know, an AOD will work with a 300. I was thinking about one myself, but decided I'd rather have a manual 5 speed OD if I go to all that trouble. MK

These bellhousings are all interchangeable.
240/300/4.9L six
289/302/351W V8
351Cleveland V8

The transmission will bolt up, no problem.

What are you swapping out???

You will need the flexplate for six cylinder AOD.
I believe a C5 flexplate is the same.
A new one is the easiest to find. Around $45-50
I haven't seen many 4.9's with aod, although they were available.

You may need a longer TV cable(one from a V8 truck engine)

Not sure what carb your using, but look at the 3 TV cable
correctors on this link.

I currently have a C4 in the truck. Wanted a A.O.D. because it is a 4 speed tranny. If I keep the six cylinder I plan on running a 450 cfm holly carb.

Still debating on keeping the 6 or dropping in the 302 that came with the tranny.

300sixowner I have a 1986 F150 with a 302 and a AOD forsale in the add section and it would have all he parts you would need.

The AOD is going out but the motor and all the related Trans parts would help your cause. Plus there is many new parts you might need.

Let me know I live out side of Chicago

Question

Yakk

You look as if you're the one to ask about AOD's & 300 I-6.

I've a '71 300 I-6 that that is getting the works done to it, in other words an Overall Performer that is being B&B'd, etc.
I've been told to get the Aluminium case Late Model AOD to put behind it.
Now I'm not up on anything that is after the Mid 60's, never had any interest in any thing newer is the reason.
Which of the AOD's has the Hard Linkage or the Cable?
Will it just bolt up to my '71 Block w/o any troubles?
Anything else you might come up w/ would be a Great help to me.
The Tranny guy is a Wiz on building bullet proof AOD's, but is not up on mating 300 I-6's to them.

Thank'ee in advance!

That post is from before mine got installed. Maybe a mini guru, I guess.

All AOD's are aluminum case, but the 89-93 manufacture year units are supposed to be the ones to have, from what those articles say.

Go with a TV cable since it will be more accurate and less fuss than a solid linkage. The very old units will have a hard linkage. If yours is setup for linkage TV, it can be changed by swapping out the TV control shaft and adding the cable bracket.

The AOD will bolt up, but still needs the Zero balance flexplate, #F224.
Order one from these guys, $17 is a VERY good deal. (I paid $50ish locally )

They're probably so cheap because the 300+AOD combo is somewhat rare.

A C-6 flexplate will physically bolt up, but the converter mounting depth is incorrect. Not good if you like youre main bearings, Tranny oil pump...
