Well it has got progressively worse. There is a ticking near the back of the engine. It's right near the valve covers and I don't know what it could be. What do sticking valves sound like? Should I be panicking? It just sounds bad that's all. What can I do?
Also I want some frigin headers but I have no where to buy them at a decent price! Someone help.
That ticking could very much be a sticking valve. How loud is it?
There is a additive that you can add to your oil that is designed to free sticky valves. I really can't give you to much experience with it though, never used it myself.
You may want to try running higher octain gas for a couple tanks also. Now that I think about it, I had a ticking once also. When I changed plugs & wires it went away. It must have been a plug wire arching off, just to give ya something to look at.
Headers are expensive!!! Your local parts shop can't get them or are they just to expensive with them? Try www.jcwhitney.com they sometimes have ledd expensive stuff. Or if you don't mind used or preowned then check www.ebay.com I'm always seeing ford truck headers over there.
I bet your exhaust manifolds are leaking, mine leak and it sounds absolutely horrible. Stick your head towards the back of the motor and have someone step on the gas to see where the sound is coming from.

Make sure it is out of gear & have a ambulance standing by!!
Sorry, I thought that was kinda funny this early in the morning. I can see a man by the name Billy Bob saying "Bubba, I'm gonna stick my head in this here motor & when I hollar you step on that there gas pedal!"
moose-
The ticking noise you're hearing could also be sticky lifters...a buddy of mine has a 71' F-100 with a 302 and it has sticky lifters. I don't think he changed his oil very often, which is what caused his to stick.
I just rebuilt my 302 in my 89' F-150 and I bought some shorty headers from summittracing.com for 169.99. They are a direct bolt on to the factory exhaust, which is a plus. I had to do a little grinding on the plenum support bracket, but other than that it was really simple. Make sure you spray those bolts on the collector with some liquid wrench or something the night before because they were really corroded on mine.
thanks guys. So sticking valves or lifters? When it's time to change my oil should I use "RESTORE"? I think that stuff is good but I'm not sure. If I rebuild the engine what kit can I get for the truck?
It could also be leaking manifolds. Is it really worth it to get headers? Like how long do they last and do they leak too? Should I just buy manifolds again or not?
I'd have to agree with the above mentioned exhaust manifold leak. It's easier to just change the gaskets and rule that out as the problem.
Headers would be a good upgrade. I ran mine for 40k+ using Mr Gasket Ultra-Seal header gaskets, and no leaks.
There is no exhaust mainfold gaskets from the factory , it could be a cracked exhaust manifold. Fords are notorious for doing this. If that's the problem then headers would be a nice upgrade
Blurry 94, your sig looks almost exactly like mine would if I had one!
I've got an 89 2-250 5.8 and a 94 L thats vorteched and stroked. It really amazes me that the engines in my trucks are, or at least used to be the same displacement
I had that same loud ticking coming from the back of the motor, my fix was replacing tho's dounut (sp?) gaskets......very quite in the engine bay now compared to what it used to sound like.
Use a length of heater hose and put it right to your ear. Its amazing what you can hear and you can put the end of the hose at many different places around your manifolds and on your valve covers.
It may save you the cost and effort spent on manifolds or headers if you find the sound is coming from somewhere else.
I'm willing to bet it's the PCV valve. Try touching it when the engine is idling, then have somone rev the motor, if it's blowing oil through it it will make noise.
try summit for your headers i got set for my 351 for only $150
they came with bolts and gaskets too. www.summitracing.com
part number SUM-G905 or SUM-G9037 these should work they are very good quality headers. mine are shorty headers not full legnth if that matters.
