For the rebuild, I bought a Felpro Gasket set. I didn't realize it came with valve seals. So I bought new valve seals(they were only 30Cents each.). Anyway the parts guy who used to rebuild engines showed me some valve seals that looked really good. But they are shorter than the ones I took out. they are constructed with a wire retainer at the top and bottum of the seal. In the felpro kit, I have ones like I took off and also some shorter same style as I took off of my 351M. Does the Length on the valve seals matter? Thanks again. Uncle Jesse
There are two kinds of seals that I know of. The stock one which isn't good for much in my opinion. Not much more than a rubber umbrella. The other is the Perfect Circle brand that has the wire ring. They require machining the top of the guide but are well worth it if you have the heads at the shop anyway.
Any idea what exact machining I have to do to use the seals with the wire rings? If it is a lot then I will use the standard ones for now and after a few months from recovering from the engine rebuild I will take them to the shop and have the heads worked over. Uncle Jesse
I'm just guessing at $75. They just kind of round off the end of the guide to a nice barrel for the seal to slide on to. You might be able to get a tool to do it at home if you search the web and ask around here.
The seal with the metal ring on the top and bottom of the seal is called a postive type seal. It goes directly on the valve guide and is retained on the guide by the metal ring around the bottom of the seal. This seal is designed to stay on the guide and meters a small amount of oil to seep by for the valve and guide. You just have to make sure it is the right size seal for the valve and guide that you have. They are a better seal than the umbrella seals.
The seals that came in the fel-pro gasket set are the umbrella type seal that ride up and down with the valve. Just push them on against the guide and they will set themselves to the proper height once the motor starts.
Thanks mvoeller. That info helped out a lot. thought I'd have this done to day but found a nick in one of the valve seats. I'm gonna try and lap it out but may have to send them to the shop. Uncle Jesse
