Question GT-40 vs. EDELBROCK HEADS

does anyone know what would give better performance? the gt-40 heads or the edelbrock performer heads? im looking to put some performance heads on a 351w and what would be the way to go?

Which GT-40s? There are at least 4 variants.
Which Edelbrocks. There are at least 3 varaints.

What are you planning on doing whith the truck?
What intake/fuel system are you planning on running?
Stock or aftermarket cam?
If aftermarket, what cam?
What exhaust ?
And while we're at it:
What tranny?
What gears?

It's all a system and ALL the parts have to work together. If you slap a set of E'brock Victors on an otherwise stock engine and try to tow with it it will be worse than stock. If you try to build an all-out bracket racer around a set of stock GT-40Ps you won't be very happy either.

If you are talking about the Gt-40P heads and the performer heads then the performers would produce much more power up top but the GT-40P heads have a better combustion chamber design and they are iron. They will make more on the bottom end and should give you an increase in mileage and power over the stock E7 or older standard heads. You just have to deal with the funny plug angles if you have headers.

GT40 heads are so and so, gtp40 are much better, if you want to spend the money on edelbrock, get tfs instead - they are far better still

Ban for the buck GT40P heads re hard to beat....these will add some torque to you 351.....just make sure you address the plug angle like Ratsmoker said....

Mac headers are usually the way to go...

As far as Edelbrocks go.....they will make better power...but they cost over a grand....I have the performrs and they work well for me.....

are stock 351w heads straight plug? cause the gtp40 have the same angle as stock 5.0 heads, meaning 5.0 headers will fit. all you would need is a custom y pipe cause 5.8 exhaust dumps straight down on the starter side cause it can, 5.0 exhaust dumps backwards at a slight angle to clear the starter, but the 5.8 is 1.4 inches wider so you cant use the 5.0 Y

The E7TE heads and the P heads do have different plug angles.

ok, as you face a stock 5.0 truck head facing the exhaust ports, the plugs angle to the right and up slightly....are not the gtp40 the same?

This page shows the difference between the standard GT40 heads and the GT40P heads. Notice the very queer angle the plugs are.

If I recall correctly....cast iron cobra style GT40 heads, E7TE, GT40X, GT40Y,
older DOOE, C90E heads all have the same spark plug angle allowing the use of 5.0 liter headers....

If you are looking at the exhaust ports on the GT40P heads, you will note that the spark plugs are aimed straight at you...making it hard to use normal headers.....

weigh the difference in price in getting a set of GT40P and headers....
against having the stock heads ported by thumperheads....

His heads flow pretty well and provide comparable performance to high dollar aftermarket heads.

I wanted to lighten the engine as well as provide higher compression, higher flow numbers and the beneft of higher rate of heat dissapation of aluminum Edelbrock performer heads....paying the extra money was worth it for me everybody is different.
