i have a 93 F150 XLT with the (4.9) 5spd and my dad said if i wanted to i can drop a bigger motor in it but the only catch is that he wants me to put in automatic in it.. give me ur advice on what i should do and what kinda motor i should get for a decent price
Oh well, I'd never swap the 4.9 out but oh well. What tranny is he thinking of putting in? If you swap anything much bigger you're going to have to put in a different tranny anyways, the M5OD just won't hold up that well.
Go with a 460. The gas will not be much worse than the 5.8L. If your gona do the work make it worth it. As far as the auto, it will be easyer to put it together.
My bet, sell it and buy a truck with a bigger engine and an auto. The amount of work and money you'll have into a swap like that wouldn't be worth it when there are so many trucks like the one you want readily available.
I'd vote for buiding the existing motor, or sellin d'truck to buy a truck that fits your needs.
If its just for a project to do, like fer extra credit, or for you & Dad to do instead of playin yatzee..by all means build a blown 460 and dont forget the NOS.
I would go to the junk yard first and see what they have, if money is a factor. If you are buying a new engine you could at least grab intakes, valve covers, oil pan, throttle body, damper pulley, timing chain cover, flex plate, tranny, cross member, tranny lines, fuel lines, shift linkage, Y-pipe, accessory brakets, alternator, ps pump, front springs if you need them, fuel injection stuff, wire harness, air intake stuff, motor mounts, distributor, computer, everything. I would buy a new starter, water pump, thermostat, water hoses, radiator and things like that. I would go with the 302 because the parts are a lot less expensive. Anything new you buy will have to be modified if you are keeping the speed density system. Ford discontinued the truck shortblock so you have to buy the Mustang roller block. You can change the cam to make it work but it is better to just change it over to mass air, this will allow you to put some nice heads on without problems and any other mods you want to do in the future. I would try to get a C-6 automatic trans. They used these on the 302, 351 and 460. They are a great transmission and cheap to have rebuilt even with performance extras. You won't have overdrive but it will take all kinds of abuse. When I priced it all out doing the work myself accept for getting the block checked and machined it was going to be about 900 bucks to rebuild, for 1200 I got the Mustang shortblock that was setup to be switched over to a roller valvetrain. I could have it in a few days, and cut out tons of work and running around I would have to do so the 300 extra dollars seemed like a deal to me. I did mine on the weekends by myself and it was a blast!
