hey fellas- gettin ready to build a 390 and after some posts in that arena I've become stumped. Some say tremec some say richmond and I'm wondering about just a c-6?At this point and time most funds are being used on engine rebuild and chasis reconditioning. Going out and buying a trany from retailer or the like is impossible.I would like to run a 3.50 rear cuz I'll being doing highway travel during hunting season. However with the upgrade I'm doing to the engine I don't want to waste the power. I want to make the kids around here in thier wantabes hang their head in that a older guy in a older truck just smoked 'em. Any suggestions would be welcomed
Thanks
You didnt say how heavy the truck is or what size tires you're using, but I can tell you this much: The 3.50's in my 6200 lb F350 Crew Cab with 33" tires and a 351/C6 are waaay toooo high. You wont be smoking anybody with those gears. I regularly get tromped on by Honda Civics, Toyota Corollas, even Geos and Hyundais, especially if there is a hill involved. I would at least go with 3.73's, or better yet 4.10's, especially if you're going to tow anything or haul anything heavy like a camper. As far as the transmission, C6 is a good trans and can stand the stress of a big engine and a heavy truck and you can find them anywhere for a reasonable price. Good luck with your project.
Wait, with a 390 that's mildly warmed over, 3.50 gears and a C6 transmission would be fine. My truck is pretty quick with 3.55 gears, a c6, and a warmed over inline 6. Heck, I can chirp the 33" tires from a stop, and with a little brake they light up wth no problem. A 390 should ROAST them from a standstill wth that setup.
