oxygen sensor removal

Anybody have any tricks for removing the oxygen sensor? All I've managed to do so far is snap the wire, but the exhaust manifold is in the way of being able to get any kind of wrench on it to get it out.

if you haven't got it out yet you can get a special tool from auto parts stores

Which vehicle?

If you heat the manifold area, it will expand slightly so oxy sensor will be easier to remove. Heat the sensor and IT will expand...making it tighter.

Penetrating oil an excellent idea....be patient...overnight a good idea. (there are stronger penetrants than WD40..ask your parts shop.)

When you install the new one, make sure to coat the threads with "Anti-Seize" (brand) compound available at auto and farm stores . Had that been done by previous installer...it would have been removable without all the extra work.

Actually, a friend at work had the special socket that is big enough to fit over the sensor. Much easier than crescent or open-ended wrenches! I guess 90% of it is having the right tool for the job at hand.

The 02 socket is a deep 7/8" socket with a notch in one side to allow for the wire. Anything 7/8" that you can fit in there should get it out.

Just a side note:

those 'special' sockets with the groove in the side are only good for installing the sensor. If you use them to remove it, they flex and want to slip if the sensor is tight.

As bigric said, cut the wire off, and use a regular deepwell 7/8" socket.

also, when you anti-seize it, make sure you get high temperature conductive anti-seize. If it is not conductive, the O2 sensor will not ground on the manifold and will give bad reading, or not work at all.

I wonder how many installers clean the new sensor thinking the compound was just for "preservation" while on the dealer shelf. I would bet many.
Well, it looks like this job may be completed with use of the right tools....as is usually the case.
Hope everything goes well.

wtroger: Every bosch O2 I've seen (the only ones I generally get because the is whats in stock) has the stuff on it. I've used a couple factory ACDELCO that don't. I don't know if Ford motorsport puts it on or not.
