Fuel Pump Tank Question?

i am working on an old jeep, i know it is not a ford but same principle. the gas tank is rusted out and i need to see if i can get the engine to run. question is if i hold a gas tank above the carb will i have to run the line through the fuel pump or will gravity be enough? also i am hooking up a coil and i have the negative going to the bottom of distributor and there is no wire going to the positive side. part of the harness was removed. can i just run a wire from the + battery terminal to that side of the coil to see if it will run? thanks PS its a 71 jeep cj5 with 225V6

yes to both, be very carefull on the fuel, you dont say what year, a better way is to set the fuel on the ground an use an electric fuel pump , much safer, good luck bob btw is that one of the old ford militarys , i used to have one .

yes it will , all the pump does is lift gas to the carb with a little preasure "4 to 7 lbs". a gallon of gas weights roughly 12 lbs , depending on temp. drop that out of a 3/8" line and it will work . kind of hard and dangerous to drive down the road that way , but for test starting , it works fine. i carry an electric fuel pump with me and with it hooked to the carb and the other end in the tank or gas can, test start cars all day long . it leaves your hands free for more important things ,like adjusting stuff and holding beer and sctatching , good luck, bob
