I have a 85 Bronco 351 HO. I think I need to have the carb rebuilt. It hesitates when starting out and occasionally stalls when starting from a stop. How involved and difficult is this to do myself with a rebuild kit from checker or autozone or should I leave it to my mechanic?
you can get a rebuilt carb from a parts store for what it would cost to have someone rebuild it for you , and the rebuilders usually have a flow bench to test them, some thing that many mechanics dont have , the store ones usually have a one year warrenty most mechanics wont go longer thean six months.if you havent done this yourself before and want it to work the first time , I would go with the store . I do mechanic work for a living and ive gotten to the point where I no longer rebuild carbs , I call the parts store and get that one year warrenty for my customers. I dont make as much money but I dont have the headachs and if they dont work I can just take it back and exchange it as opposed to playing with it and having an irritated customer , good luck ,bob
If so, then the quickest (and most expensive) way to get it back on the road will be to buy a new(or rebuilt) carb from an autoparts house.
If not, then I would get the re-built kit and do it yourself. It will be a great learning experience and if you totally screw it up(which I doubt) then you will only be out 20 bucks or so and some time.
Rebuilding a carb is not that difficult. Just pay strict attention to how it comes apart so you can put it back together. The main thing you have to concern yourself with is getting the carb clean inside and out. Especially all the tiny ports. I usually soak them overnight in a 1 gallon can of carb cleaner then blow out all of the ports with compressed air.
Also remember that if you run into problems rebuilding it just fire off a post here and someone will chime in to help you. This site is a god send for the Ford truck "do-it-yer-selfer".
if i could make one more suggestion , buy an eidilbrock, even thier remans are better than most anything else and thier tech support is awsome ,i dont own one , but i have several hollys and stock carbs . i have installed several eidelbrocks and once they are tuned i never see them again, good luck, bob
