Cleaning carb without removing finish
I am getting ready to clean a Holley carb I bought recently. It was profesisonally rebuilt years ago or may even be NOS, can't remember which. It has surface rust on the steel parts from sitting on a shelf for many years and the casting is oxidized. The steel parts are easy to clean but I'm wondering what's the best way to take the oxidation off the casting? I cleaned up a little spot with a wire cup on my Dremel to see how that would look. It shined up but I may have taken the protective finish off. The instructions in a rebuild kit I have warned to be careful of the finish on the casting. What should I clean it with? I would think the coating would be reasonably tough since it can be subjected to kerosene, laquer thinner, carb cleaner, etc. as part of the regular maintenance cleaning process.

This isn't much help, but I'll post it anyways. I cleaned one of my old ones up with some prestone brake cleaner, and a soft wire brush(manual) and wd-40 with some fine steel wool. It's held up over the last 4-5 months. I'll e-mail you when it starts oxidize and corrode.
