Originally posted by monsterbaby what do you mean that gear drives cause erratic timing that is the one major advantage of the gear drive the timing is rock solid compared to ANY timing chain as ALL of the timing chains stretch, and usually some within the time that it takes to break in the cam, and will allow atleast 1 degree of cam timing change, and the cheaper rollors will alow as much as 3 deg ( I measured a summit chain in a 302 when I changed a cam to go bigger, the motor had less than 100 miles on it, and allowed 3 deg of cam change)
Apparently, you havn't got a good brand of chain, because anything worth buying does not stretch. What I meant about the timing being erratic, is that a chain will dampen harmonic vibrations, where as a gear drive will not. This transfers directly to the cam and distributor, causing erratic timing.
Some of the better brands include Ford Motorsport, Cloyes, and DynaGear. If I am not mistaken, you are correct, all are made by DynaGear. Make sure to get a double roller, as these are much better than a factory replacement set.
As a point of reference on my chain, it was a summit chain which is also made by dyna gear, and it was double roller but ALL chains stretch it is the nature of the beast, mine just stretched faster possible than other as I abuse this motor hard but take any motor with any timing chain, and measure how much cam timing change you can get without turning the crank you will be suprised
