An option for you:
Install an electric fan, and remove the engine driven fan and clutch. You should be okay for around town/low load conditions. When you need to pull a trailer, or plan on some heavy duty use, just reinstall the fan and clutch for that amount of time you require the additional airflow.
Your waterpump is fine with the fan and clutch. It is designed to handle the axial, as well as radial forces induced by the torque of the fan.
I agree about the noise.
As far as inefficincy goes, there is a huge balncing act in a fan design between performance, and the packaging spaces allowed under the hood for optimal design. Physics also screws us in the end...

I think these guys [link:www.flex-a-lite.com/auto/270_280.htm|Flex-a-Lite] just came out with an electric fan application for the Super Duty. I couldn't find specific application info on their somewhat confusing application chart so I just e-mailed them. Maybe they will e-mail me back...
That would be great if flex-a-lite made a fan specifically for our trucks. Let me know what they say. I have a flex-a-lite black magic electric fan on my mustang and it works great.
