Last Friday on my way to the vet, pulled up at a stop light and it just friggin' died. No warning, just dead. Checked for fuel problems and ended up getting towed (out of the road by a... a... chebby... gawd) to the dealer. They checked it over with the handheld and found a bad crank sensor, 15 minutes later it fired right up. I have 2 tekkie questions:
1.) It doesn't seem to have the grunt it used to, and I'm wondering if the handheld changed anything in my Banks chip or the Banks tranny module. Don't know if this is possible, or if I'm being wierd.
2.) The tech said this (sensor) is a common diesel problem and that anybody going cross country packs a FEW in their kit to keep from getting stuck. I put one with my fuel filter - does anybody else keep one handy JIC? Again, am I being **** about this? As simple as it was to change, I carry tools with me, seems like good advice anyway.
The only way it will affect your chip is if they reprogrammed the pcm at the same time If they just had it hooked up long enough to pull and erase the code, then it wasn't reprogrammed.
I carry a spare in my glove box along with a 10 mm to change it just in case. You never know when it'll go out and I don't want to EVER get pulled by a Chevy!!
I replaced my CPS when the truck had 125K on it. I don't carry a spare, because mine went out slow enough that I had plenty of warning prior to having it fail totally. Carrying one isn't a bad idea, just not something I've gotten around to. Carrying a few would be overkill IMHO, unless you're going to be gone from home for a looooooooooong time.
