I was going through the Haynes TFI/Coil testing procedures, and the coil's secondary resistance is 7,600 ohms. The specs are 8,000-11,500 ohms. All of the other checks were ok. Is this enough of a difference to warrant replacement? What would the slightly lower resistance be noticeable in the truck's performance?
Ohms = Volts / Amps
Ohm is a measure of resistance to electrical conduction.
So with the coil(simplified) runing short 1000 ohms; the
volts will be short. Double check your instrument first.
Well, 8,000 to 11,500v is a pretty big gap, so I don't see why being just 400v under would be a big problem. But if your having trouble go ahead and replace it for peace of mind. I just recently picked up a new MSD blaster TFI coil for my 86 for less then napa wanted for the premium echlin replacement coil. Bolted right on and plugged right in.
