My 79 has a problem where the engine just suddently stops. You pull over, put it into park, and it starts right back up. I have tried putting it in neutral while I'm coasting, but it won't start until I stop and put it into park. If I leave it idle long enough, it will stop then too.
Here's the stuff I have replaced so far:
solid state ignition module
coil
ignition switch
distributor
spark plug wires and the plugs
fuel filter
I'm suspicious that the ignition module might be the culprit or possibly the neutral start switch. Could it be the fuel pump?
What am I over looking. Most of the stuff I replaced needed to be replaced anyway, so I didn't waist any money.
Anyone out there have any suggestions on what might be the place to try next?
My first choice would be to inspect the wiring harness between the dash and the engine for poorly done splices, chaffing or anything that does not look 100%.
I think the neutral safety switch only prevents power from going to the starter solenoid, it wouldn't be my first guess. When it dies and you try to start it in neutral does the starter turn?
Check out the voltage regulator as well, had that cause the same problem on one of my trucks. You can take the ignition components, like the module, to a parts store and have them tested (usually for free). Sure beats buying a new one to troubleshoot a problem.
