i keep hearing a noise coming from the front or mid of my truck. sometimes its a thud and sometimes it a loud squeeking sound. usually hear it when you are slowing to a stop and sometimes when you hit a bump. it usually when the brake is applied but it also happens when driving down the road. i have no idea what it might be and it doesnt do it all the time. at first i thought it might be the trans but now i think it could be the trans or something in the front end suspension maybe. the reason i think it might be the trans is because of the downshifting when stopping but i dunno. like i said it dont happen everytime you go to stop its only sometimes. its a 4.6L with an wuto trans and 3.55 rear end. if you have any ideas on what it might be let me know. i am calling the dealer tomorrow to take it in.
thanks
nick
P.S. second time truck has been in this week. thats more than in the year and a half i have had it. its makin me think about tradin to a 2004 F150
just got home from the bowling alley and the truck has done the same noise again. seems like it does it when you get up to highway speeds and then get on the breaks a little to slow down. i will get up again in the morning and drive it again to see.
well i took it to the dealer today and a mechanic rode with me. it didnt make the noise them but conviently did it all this morning and on the way home from the dealer.
well i think i have narrowed it down to just the trans now. its almost like the gears are sticking and it making the sound when it finally get out and alsothe sound studderd when a down shift studderd
have not changed it. was waiting till 30, 000 to change it. just had the oil changed and they checked it like always and said it was fine. the dealer also did a 99 point inspection oin it earlier this week when it was there. i am going to check it again myself tomorrow and once again call the dealer.
Oh, I wasn't sure how many miles that it had on it.
It is normal to get a clunking noise when you slow down to around 20mph then accelerate and the tranny downshifts. Ford says that this is acceptable.
If all else fails, take it back to a Ford stealer, that's what the warranty is for. Use it while ya got it!!!!!

its not a clunking noise, it sounds more like the gears are sticking and it wont down shift. then when it shifts it squeeks and bangs loudly. like the clutch plates are also gone. i am gonna take it to the dealer and if it goes back 3 times and it aint fixed then i will lemon law it and get a 2004 F150 4x4 with a 5.4L
Just get a new tranny, I had horrible problems on the 2003 with the tranny freewheeling and revving consequently to about 3500 before she'd grab, it also would do a clunk or sound like what you describe when you got back into the gas at low speeds, Got it to do it for the service tech once, with the freewheel as a seperate prob, and since he couldn't find any codes or anything else after replacing the valve body, he warrantied it for a completely new tranny. Problem solved.
well the truck was sitting in the driveway warming up this morning and it was doing the noise while ideling. i dont know if it is another problem or if it is the same one. i seen in another forum where ford says they have bad heads on 2002 to 2004 explorers and mountaineers. 2002 to 2004 crown vic, grand marquis, and town cars. 2001 to 2004 mustang GT. 2001 to 2004 E series vans. 2001 to 2004 expedition, and 2001 to 2004 F150's. i dont know if tha could be the prob lem or not it was also having a hard time trying to idle while the soud was going on.
