I know this may not make any sense...but here goes. I have been getting my 87 octane at a store called Maverik here in Utah, I filled up at another station last week, and I have also bought a fiberglass top for my truck, I cant believe how much better it runs and how much more miles per gallon it seems like I am getting, usually I can go to Salt lake city, approx 40 miles from me and back it uses almost 1/4 a tank, now I have driven at least that twice and I am just under a 1/4....maybe the first place has really bad gas...or could it be the top helps on drag?
I was pretty surprised myself. Of course I am pretty old (31, that's almost dead!) and I only drive 60-65 mph on the highway. Now remember that I have a reg cab 2wd with a 6 speed. That's pretty much the lightest truck you can get. Two weeks ago, I took a small 534 mile trip and used 29.7 gallons, that's about 17.98 mpg. Last saturday, we did 490 miles on 27.7 gallons, that's 17.69 mpg. Not bad on winter gas and a 20 mph headwind, pissing rain half the way. In the summer, I can hit 20mpg easily. On average, I get about 650 miles per tank on highway, 420 city driving. Ford did alright with the 5.4L. That's pretty good mpg's since my truck has the aerodynamics of a portable toilet. I guess I could do even better with a diesel.

Hey, I'm 31... but I can't keep it below 70 on the interstate. My brother has a F150 with the 5.4 and has seen a best of 16 mpg! I just went 350 miles with my V10 and got 13.3 mpg... but half of those miles had 2300 lbs of oak in the bed.
1)tire pressure chkd
2)Air Filter clean
3)Cold temp start ups are richer in fuel ,due to computer input.
4)dirty injectors
5)more weight in back if you plow
I work in a bakery, we have seen an average of 2-3 mpg loss due to W.C.S (a.k.a.) wedding cake syndrome. Also some stations sell bad gas and cheap donuts. (a.k.a.) C.D.S. cheap dounut syndrome.
Hmmm, I didn't notice a 2-3 mpg decrease when I got married. I have never put cheap donuts in the gas tank either, although my wife did pump diesel in my gasoline 5.4L 1999 F250 once. (All F250's are diesel, ain't they?)
