Unhappy check engine light

HI all: I have a 1995 F150 with the 5.0. Over the weekend, the check engine light came on and stayed on. It had been coming on intermittently. We checked the computer, but it was not showing anything. It was empty, no codes. The truck is in limp home mode, wont accel above 35 mph. Does anyone have any advise as to the cause and the fix? is it the computer? PLease help

It must be some sort of wiring fault or a fault in the computer. Check all circuits for shorts to power and shorts to ground. If there is a company near you that can test your computer, I would get it tested before replacing it. I'd be more inclined to say that it is not the computer because it still knows enough to turn on the check engine light.

Thanx I will have a local mechanic give it a look. a short makes some sense due to the fact that it was intermittent before and now it is constant.

we ended up removing the computer. it was so corroded that it was not worth trying to clean the connections. installed a new computer. the truck runs fine now.

Hey, great, glad it worked out for you.

If your computer was corroded, you probably have a leak in the windshield or a hidden rusthole by the gutter and the water's running down the pillar.

Just something to look for... ECM's should never get rusty unless you submerge the truck in a lake.

I kinda figured that I had more work to do. When we took the computer out, i got the impression that something had been living in the cab, like a mouse. So I am going to have to make sure all the wires are intact, plus find any leaks and seal them as best I can. I sure hope that the truck wasnt submerged. Title was not salvage and no carfax indications of damage or claims. When you buy used, its always an adventure.
Thanks

I wasn't trying to suggest your truck went swimming. I was just trying to humorously suggest that the ECM should always by as dry as the day Ford made it

Sorry the humor didn't translate into text well.
