Mileage Cam
Just wondering if anyone knows of a cam that gets good gas mileage out of a 400?

How does the 255DEH compare to the stock cam for torque? I get 17.5 MPG with the stock cam.

I get 16-18 MPG, depending on how heavy the foot is.
Mine is stock, with high performance coil, wires, plugs, cap, rotor, properly tuned 2150, WIX filters, and such.

I'd start by reducing your tire size, you are lugging the motor pretty hard turning all that tire.
A good tune up, and a carb rebuild (if necessary), will help.

Mine's a '71 400 in a Galaxie with 3.00 gears. The original owner said it got 20 MPG when the gas was better.

Yeah those 35x15.5x15 swampers are my mud tires, the 33's are my street tires. My mileage is about 12mpg with the 33's. My carb needs to be rejetted, I can smell gas in the exhaust. Can that cause my lousey gas mileage? I think my cam is the mager player, its a 268/218 comp cam. I want to switch to a better gas saving cam. Sorry for the long post

Kopfenjager, don't apologize for giving details,
, we need em'.
Yeah rejetting the carb should be a priority, you are throwing raw gas down the pipe if you can smell it.
I'm probably out on a limb here, but is your thermactor system enabled?

At the very least, I would hook up the PCV system.
I'm not sure what else you can do.
I'm sure you are running headers and free flowing exhaust.

Yeah headers to 2.5 turbo mufflers that dump under the cab. The pvc is hooked up. New cam is what I need, but what one?
