changing coolant?

Im going to be changing coolant this weekend on the Expy '99 w/ 5.4l ,rear air and it states capacity is 27.9 quarts(which equals 6 gallons

So basically I need 3 gallons water/3 gallons of Antifreeze for this change for a 50/50 ratio correct??

thanks

28 quarts equals 7 gallons, but that sounds really "high" to me. I recently did mine and refilled with two gallons of coolant/anti-freeze.

It is high but because it has the rear air/heater setup, it takes more according to the owners manual.

I've got rear air too, but that has nothing to do with coolant since all that's back there is an A/C evaporator coil. Regardless, if the manual says 7 gallons, then I'd certainly believe it and use up to 3.5 gallons of the green stuff....don't use the orange (acid-based) stuff.

Why the "green stuff"??? the green contains silicates which form into solids after a year or so. The orange has better corrosion inhibitors from what i understand. Yes the two fluids cant be mixed but if you drain, flush, and fill wouldn't it be ok??

My 1999 Owner's Guide specifically recommends against the orange antifreeze.

The fluid capacity is pretty high. I found that I ended up using a lot more distilled water that I had expected. I could only drain/add about 1 gallon of fluid in the radiator/overflow tank at a time with the thermostat closed. So to flush out the 'Prestone Super Flush' and the tap water used to flush the 'Prestone Super Flush', it took a lot of filling and draining with the distilled water. I waited until I had it flushed thoroughly and filled with distilled water and then drained some and added roughly 3.5 gallons of Prestone green coolant.

In retrospect, it would have been easier to remove the thermostat.

Here's a response from Prestone:

"The green is the regular antifreeze with a silicone-silicate based rust inhibitor. The organic (orange) contains an OAT (organic acid technology) type rust inhibitor. The inhibitor is what differs between the two. They both use ethylene glycol for freeze and boil protection. Both antifreezes are compatible with ANY cooling system. As for mixing the two, we don't recommend it because it will reduce the stability of the rust inhibitor. It is best to stick with what was in the system prior."

I've read that the two are not at all compatible and if mixed can cause some weird chemical reactions. Others have complained that the orange stuff clogs up water passages and ports in heater cores. The green stuff has been around for decades while the orange is new and is supposedly longer life. I'll continue flushing and filling every three years with the green.....for peace of mind if for no other reason.

I agree...go with the green unless you have a vehicle that specifically states it needs the orange.

Like buzzard says, the green stuff has been around forever...

My '03 uses the gold stuff that Ford says is good for 100K miles.
I'll probably change it sooner, though
